Any one have any tricks to loosen the axle shaft in the tubes
need to move front wheels closer together, and they are tight in the tubes

Not sure how the axle is constructed but if the clamp bolts go thru the tubes remove the bolts and replace with a size smaller bolts and leave them loose. Soak it with oil and drive it around running over a 4 X 4 to jar it.

The smaller bolts will allow enough movement to break the rust but prevent the axle from folding.

You are lucky the axle is in the wide position which has less surface to be stuck.

Many years ago, the 966 was stuck and we tried just that with the small bolts to allow some movement of the tube and drove it around some rough ground. It was still stuck.

Finally went redneck on it and chained one spindle to a stout tree and pulled on the opposite spindle with a 12k lb tractor to put tension on the chains (basically pulled until the front wheels were just in the air). Then "gently tapped" the tube with a 15lb sledge and the tube would slide about 1/4" at a time.

Use plenty of penetrating oil: a 50/50 mix of atf and acetone is a good, low cost penetrant.

Had this problem on an 806. Jack-up front end and secure. Remove tire and all clamp bolts from axle. Chain a long bar or pipe upright to the knuckle. Stand on a step ladder and rotate the axle back and forth with the pipe. Lots of penetrating oil. Should free up after cussing a little bit.

Soak the snot out of it with penetrating oil several times get it jacked up, loosen everything that needs loosened or removed and twist while pulling out.

I have found that if you try to go inwards first you may never get it lose enough to move again with out heating it with a torch.

I have also found that if some else is tapping on the axle not beating with a hammer while your doing this job helps break them lose.

Got them out !!
For awhile the 2390 idea wasn't sounding too bad
Didn't have to buy anything but another can of skunk pi_ _
Thanks to all

That sounds encouraging. I have to move the front axle on the 1086 and it hasn't been moved since I went to 30" rows 30 years ago. They are all the way in and I have to move them out one hole so loader brackets don't chew the front tires. Ugh!
