This is what I do When in Need of Specifics lots of info can be found here on the forum.. might search the archives on (head gasket.. a guy can rite a 1000 words , and No doubt they are in the archives OR some one will answer you in that 100 word manner ... best wishes , jim

NAPA gets my gaskets from Fel-Pro,expensive,but the best.Ive used them over 3 differant times on my 830 Com diesel puller! Some kits have o-rings for oil and water holes.Put gasket on right side up[marked on gasket].I always coat my gaskets with neverseaz on both sides before placing on block.Let head down over the studs easy, dont let it drop.Torque in increments to 145ft.lbs.Drive it like you stole it! Good luck and let us know what happens. Hoss

Aaron, good info from Hoss and Jim H below. Also when starting to torque the heads down start with the logitudinal middle bolts first and work your way to the outside by working diagonally from side to side. This is in lieu of having a bolt pattern guide in a manual which from your questions I assume you don't have.

Working from the outside in can cause head warping and compression leakage.

You should also set on the manifold and snug it to the heads before torqueing the heads down tight, to assure proper alignment. Make sure you retorque the head bolts after a proper warm up, and reset the valves.

Very important to clean the base of the head studs next to the block. Sometimes rust and old gasket material will prevent tight seal next to stud. I made a tool from a piece of pipe by cutting teeth with a file that fits over the stud to clean the block next to the stud... Gene

ONE MORE THING ,, AFTER 1st WARM UP .. retorque the heads ,remove riocker arm assembly , following same squence loosen each bolt 1/4 turn and retorque ,,. you will get a easy 1/4 turn more than you had . also make sure all thread bosses are clean of rust ect , and well oiled

One question on this. are you saying to loosen an individual bolt 1/4 turn then re-torque to spec, till all have been done? Or are you saying loosen all the head bolts and re-torque to spec?

thanks
