DC Radiator removal

Need to remove the radiator from my DC.
Checked the service manual...it does not tell me much.

Need pointers and thoughts here as I tear into it. It does not appear to be a typical radiator job. Am I right?

This is a pretty straight forward project. After draining the coolant the two bolts under the bottom of the cast radiator base need to be removed. Then the lower radiator hose can be wriggled off. Then the two bolts holding the upper cast radiator neck to the head come out. That is all there is to it. Warning: the radiator assembly is about all a strong young man will want to handle. Be careful not to bend the fan blades and be careful not to break off the water drain pipe (if it is still attached to the bottom of the radiator). If we take a radiator off for some reason we always put on a new generator belt, as this is the easiest way to replace one. Also, there is sometimes a lower fan shroud that needs to be removed. Many times that shroud is missing. Good Luck! Don

Don, I always remove the drain pipe first. One thing he needs to be careful of is tightening the bolts into the head when putting it back together; I cracked an ear on one on my C and had to replace it with off a D. The break caused a leak that I could not stop.

I use a engine cherry picker or a loader with a chain fall hanging on it to pull the radiator. There are 2 bolts that come up from the bottom that can twist off. If I am going to pull a DC radiator I will soak these with penetrating oil and try to break them loose ahead of time. Use never seize on these bolts. I like to replace the drain nipple with a brass one. I usually split the bottom hose. The grill bolts also give trouble twisting off so this is a good time to free them up and anti seize them. Let us know how it goes. Nick

I just pulled mine in order to change that belt. Don't miss the chance to get it now , it's a 'tch...

When replacing check pads under 2 lower mounting bolts. Thickness is important to get close to proper height for upper radiator neck to block. Forcing can cause broken neck.
