Case 970 won't shift

Hi guys. My neighbor has a 970 that starts and runs perfectly,
but won't shift or move. Now this is what he has told me so
far, I haven't looked at in person yet. Was wondering if hyd
pump failure would result in this?? Anyone out there have any
similar problems? Thanks

Hi Tony, To make an educated guess a few more details would be helpful. Let us know what does or not work and is it a power shift tractor? Rod.

Not much info to go on. Was the tractor being used and did it just stop going, or was it stored for the winter and wouldn't move after setting all winter? If it was working properly and stopped moving sudenly, and it is an older tractor where the pump drive and RPS34 drive are tied to the torque limiter, you would not have steering or hyds. either. Newer ones had the pump driven off a spline in flywheel, and you would have steering.
Running and with clutch out can he select and shift it into any of the gears, and does it have an engine surg when he depresses the clutch pedal. All info that is needed for preliminary trouble shooting.
If it was in storage all winter, it could be that there is water in the bottom of tranny, and the pump suction screen is blocked.
As I said we need these questions answerd before giving you guidance.

my power shift 1070 has always been ok , til the other day .., but I think it is fine now ,. here is what happened ..Due to poor health I had a fella put in a new pto clutch pac in my early 1070 ,,changed out fluids and filters, adjusted parkin brake too ,, pikt it back up to drive home other day and this happened ,,???.durn tranny was between 2nd and 3rd all I can figure ??..the road is downhill for 2 miles some steep reguiring to be pulled back into 1st in 4th range ,, when the hill eased I simply bumped it into the hi side and throttled up ,,. sumthin just did not seem rite ,, wondered if brake was over tite ,, motor seemed to be luggin , stopped chekt brakes ,,nuthin hot ??,, took off again ,, 1st , 2nd , 3rd didn't seem rite , lugin the motor , or was it the fuel filters petering out ? after about 1000 ft I detected a burnin smell ,, SHUT DOWN!!.. brakes were cool ..called mechanic and told him sumthin was up ,,..all pressure were good ,,over the phone , he listened as I shifted thru while in neutral the powershift, lever , 1st and 2nd would bounce the needle but shiftin to 3rd made no difference ,,clutched and tried reverse , all sounded and acted perfect ,, then went 1st ,2nd ,and 3rd flawlessly, and repeated all shifts serveral times ,, all was well ,,and never gave me any more trouble ,,. only thing I can figure is , new oil , air lock somewhere in system , 30 degreestemp, and slower engine speed while shiftin all were factors in this shifter misque,, just wonder if it may be wise when 1st start up in neutral , to try all power shift positions and listen and watch forall the common noises 1st , before tryin to move

My guess would be the torque limiter went on the flywheel. If it is the early yellow tractor the torque limiter drives everything hydraulics and transmission. You have to split it but aftermarket limiter is not too bad of price. I could do it in a day myself.
