This is the switch on my 1993 F350 took me 2 days to find this after I lost dash, running and tail lights. Funny thing no service bulletin or recall Found out this is very common. Anyway I'm going to post some pics of the tractor and Issues I have now.

I have a 97 F350 and use the Ford Truck Enthusiast site- www.ford-trucks.com They seem to have enough knowledge among the members to always be able to help, kind of like here.

The Ford and Dodge pickups with out under hood fuse and relay boxes are not able to run trailer lights very long without using some sort of relay. I put mine near the battery and tapped a side marker light wire for a trigger and then a fused wire to trailer plug. A relay has a wiring diagram on it.

I would guess that if this is the first time you have had the problem on a 23 year old truck it can't be much of a common problem. I scrapped my 1992 F250 last summer with a lot worse problems and 230,000 miles. In that time I never had this problem but would not have been surprised. Just sayin..... Jerry

I did find this exhaustive and detailed read That led me to assume this was a very common problem. I have fixed the issue the picture is of the old switch and connector. Yea your right about the age of the truck .It does make Me question the data I was given.

You think the trailer lights created the extra draw that burnt the switch? makes sense ,and you could be right the burnt pin is an in from battery voltage. Thanks Ill look at putting that relay.

I had a 90 F250 that did the same thing. I didn't pull trailer with it. Just a daily driver. I put a new one in and burned it up the same way in 3 months. Found out it only did it if I ran the headlights on high beam. I finally got fed up with it after 4 new switches and wired one in from a 73 Chevy. Sold the truck a year later and the last time I saw it, it was still working. I don't think it is as much a Ford issue as a cheap aftermarket parts issue. I would try a new switch directly from Ford.
