2590 Telescopic steering wheel Help!

Telescope does not lock anymore , going to fix, looked at parts breakdown ,doesn't look 2 complicated. I thought I would ask before I tore into it for maybe some pointers. Thanks

Sort of simple, you will need to replace the plastic key stock like parts(2) of them. Just look under dash and remove the pin in the steering shaft and pull the wheel and shaft out. The only thing that will cause you to swear is removing the small internal snap ring to get at the plastic locks. Rod.

I agree with the cussing at the internal snap ring. I ground a small slot in the shaft to make it a lot easier to get that snap ring out.

I just had a thought on the plastic keys since I redid my 2590 again. The homemade rubber strap keys only lasted about 40 tach hours and I still don't like the CaseIH price for two 1/4x1/4x1/2 pieces of plastic.

What if one where to use brass or aluminum key stock and tapered one end of each key at 45degrees and put a matching angle on the two steel keys that are in the column? This way the angle would force the brass key outward and friction lock in the column keyway.

Or better yet would be to fab two steel keys and not mess up the factory ones.
