RE: Gas tank cusion/pad

Getting ready to mount fuel tank back on my painted SO. What is everyone using under the fuel tank for padding? Also the parts book shows some padding on top of the fuel tank where the hood sits?

I've never used anything on top of the fuel tank, but I cut pieces out of an inner tube as a pad for the bottom of the tank.

Go to your closet and find an old belt that shrunk, HeHe, and cut off the buckle to support the tank. A peice of nylon strapping that holds cardboard boxes together for shipping will work well between the tank and hood.

I go to a fabric store like Jo-Ann Fabrics and get them to cut strips of felt. The original material under the tank was wool felt ~2" wide and 1/4" thick, and I believe that the material on top of the grill and on top of the fuel tank was thin Herring-Bone-Twill ~3/4" wide.

Herring-Bone-Twill is a woven cotton fabric. You can find it in various widths of finished woven strips called "bunting" which are used to reinforce the hems of dresses. You should also be able to get lengths of bunting at Jo-Ann Fabrics. In any case, you will want some type of padding to prevent the metal parts from rubbing holes into each other.

Dick,

We have gone to pieces of round baler belting for under the gas tank. Your SO is really coming together now. When I was a kid there were several in this neck of the woods. Nice to see one fixed up again. Don

Thanks for all the info. I used an old leather belt on my 500D when I restored it. I'm trying to use as close to original as I can on this SO. We have a Jo Annes Fabric store here, I'll check there. Dick, OR.

I believe the original material to insolate the tank from the straps was a woven cotton material like what is used for woven military belts with the brass buckles. You probably could find it at a fabric store, or use belts purchased at a thrift store like Goodwill. The original material on a VAO-15 gas tank that has been in the family since new was a natural off-white color. Jim - Oregon
