Cam shaft on a 336 b engine from a 770

There is a spring and pin in the front of the cam shaft that rides up against the front aluminum cover. It looks like the pin is almost wore through the front. Should a person build up the cover before it wears through the front? Has any one had a pin come through the cover? On the side note what is the best cam lobe lube to use while assembling the valve train. Apparently new oils contain very little additive that helps lube flat tappets and lobes.

Yes I have seen those pins come through the front. If you have the cover off yet I would add a little material to the worn spot. Much easier now than later. As for the assembly lube I have only ever used white assembly grease. I know there is special cam lubes if that is a concern. Rod.

I use straight STP on the camshaft lobes, and 1/2 STP with 1/2 15W40 on all bearings. It will still be there in 10 years if going into storage before running, but not so thick it plugs oil galleries like assembly lube can.

I do not know what you have there, but 336's are not in 770's. I have worked on many 336's, but never one with an aluminum timing cover.

There's a special lube for cams/lifter that I can't remember the name of right now. I think it might be a Federal Mogul product? It's green, thick, and very "stringy". I know it's also NOT to be used on roller cams, obviously not a problem here. I think it's mainly for breaking in new cams/lifters, but I use it on used ones to.
