Painting the 830

This 830 Gas COM tractor belongs to my son. 5 years ago we decided to paint it. We started to tear it apart and something else came up that day. Well like things go we were not able find time to finally finish it until now. This weekend we worked on the sheet metal, next week clean and paint chassis and rims and the following weekend put it all back together again.

Looks great as usual. I like all the helping hands that you made, to get the job done. I still have to build a filter box like you posted about a couple months ago so I can paint in the shop with the spraygun.

Rod, what have you found that works best for cleaning the chassis? I have a bunch of tractors I hope to paint over the next several years. SC, two DCs, two 1370. They're pretty clean overall but of course each has it's caked grease and oil areas.

I am only speaking for myself here, but I never saw any primer on on two tone tractors when I sanded them down for paint. When I built my cab this winter, I treated salvaged steel and some new sheet stock with a metal etching liquid on a rag, rinced it clean and applied color, with no primer. Not saying it is correct, but It looks good now.

I etched the hood and dash w/muriatic acid , sanded ,reapplied ,rinsed, and ended up with what Rod shows before the final paint. Then you paint?

I just use our hot high pressure washer. We wash and wash, then when it is clean we wash it again, lol. At that point any dirt and grease are gone and so is any loose old paint. I never sand blast the chassis but try to clean all the sheet metal with it. We do not paint a lot of tractors and have had real good luck like this. Like all paint jobs, painting is the easy part, clean and prepping is the tough one, Rod.

Loren we use the old shop area to paint and it works great cuss I don't have to try to keep this place spotless any more. But in the remodeled shop that little air cleaner takes crap out of the air like crazy. If I leave it run all day the filter will get dirty even if there was no grinding or painting. Even small amounts of painting and it will show up on that filter. My shop still gets dusty of course, but that thing certainly has to be lessening problem. Rod.

Chuck, I use the CASEIH enamels. No I have never primed. The sand blasting etches the metal. We wipe everything down with a solvent and then paint. Rod.

That is what I did. The only spots that primer would have helped was where I applied bondo. Primer is a filler, and it fills in the porous surface of the bondo, and after sanding it is smother.

The tractor is looking great Rod! Hope I still have enough money to paint mine after I do repairs. Now I did a little paint and body work 40 years ago I'm a retired aircraft mechanic now. Back then we never used the grey primer just red oxide primer. Most of us have seen a car or truck with factory paint peeling off you will usually find grey primer under the paint. I would use red oxide if your going to prime it at all. Don't know if they even still make it. I Guess I never really introduced myself my name is Byron Born in Davenport Iowa in Scott county. Most my family is still there since the late 1800s Huntington's and Hagen's, I'm retired now living in Willcox Arizona. Hope no one minds if I put my 2 cents in when I think I can help. You all have been great. Thanks for all the suggestions in the past, and hope you don't mind if I pick your brain in the future.
