1370 Trans Question for Rod and Others

Rod, finally starting to split the newer of my 1370, which as you might recall both are doing (or not doing) the same things. Got some questions.

Quick recap - both start and run great, all hydraulics work in both tractors, but no surge when inching pedal depressed and can shift any range or power shift with or without clutch depressed and no sound or action. We talked before and narrowed it to the front PTO shaft breaking after the hyd pump drives but before power shift, or sun gear at input of power shift.

Got an original manual and did some research. Going to work on the '75 first, save the '74 for next. Thought it'd be telling to fire up the '75 and see if the PTO spun. It does spin.

First question, correct me if I'm wrong, but if the PTO spins, it must be the sun gear broken since the main shaft which is driven by the front PTO shaft has to be turning also? Of course we'll find out here shortly but thought that might make sense.

Next question, how do you support the rear of the cab when splitting the transmission from the torque tube? Since I have to fix the fuel sending unit, was thinking of removing the fuel tank and chaining the rear of the cab floor board where the tank straps fasten, and supporting overhead from a substantial hoist we have (old Minnneapolis Moline Uni-Harvestor hoist). Take the vertical bolts out of the rear mounts, lift just enough with hoist to see pressure taken off the rear mounts. Any better ideas for supporting the cab when doing this?

Another question, you mentioned you may have all the gaskets I need for this splitting/repair job. If you still have them, let me know what you want for them. My email is [email protected].

Last question, if you dont have splitting stands with casters is there a better way to roll the transmission out from under the tractor than with some heavy duty floor jacks?

I haven't tried checking if the PTO spins on the '74, robbed turbo off it last year and haven't put it back together to fire it up. Will work on it later this summer. Could be front PTO shaft or sun gear, don't know yet.

What luck I have to own two 1370 with basically the same problem!

Thanks Rod and all for the help!

Barry the PTO will work if the main drive shaft is broken, that shaft is hollow and the PTO shaft runs through it. I just support the rear of cab with a overhead hoist, the fuel gauge sender can be replaced without removing the tank, there is a access hole in the cab behind the seat on the LH side covered up with cab foam. Pull up the foam and you will see it. Take the cab mount bolts out and lift cab just enough so all clears when rolling out rear end. I use a floor jack to support rearend, jack must be attached to draw bar area, yes the back end is heavier that front. There is not a lot of weight on jack as it is there just to keep the rear end from tipping back. Attach it someway so it does not slip out of place. As for to gaskets I do have them all but would have to get them priced, it should be 10% less than a dealer would charge you but of course there would be Frt. added. Rod.

Thanks Rod. About the fuel tank, we were just worried that the pressure on the chain at the rear of the floorboard would deform the tank. We may try leaving it in and changing sending unit through the cab as you suggest.

My brother and I were looking over the transmission housing today and came to that same conclusion, sure looked heavier in rear than front. I'm tempted to make a joke here .. but had better not :).

Understood on gaskets. I'm happy to buy from you or if more bother than it's worth for you I can get it through the dealer when I get whatever part(s) I need to get to repair it.

Thanks again for all the help and advice.

Barry, I will post the part no. for the gaskets you will need to ask dealer for. That should be the best route for you. Glad to help. Rod.
