Triple Range Oil without hydraulics

I know the manual specs light weight oil, hydraulic oil or ATF for the torque tube on a 311b, but if I don't have hydraulics and it will only lube the triple range tranny can I just run the same 80w-90 that's in the transmission?

Thanks,

Zack

Zack, I would not advise it, there are needle bearings in the lower countershaft and the top input gear that would oil better with an oil that can flow, especially in cooler temps. Some may have another opinion but I would suggest a good grade 10 weight engine oil since hydraulics are not a factor.

TCH was the original oil for those units and HyTran Ultra replaced that and a good grade ATF an alternate in the TCH days.

The top shelf oils recommended are costly and I can relate to not wanting to spend the money if lube is the only consideration.

Thanks mEl, that makes total sense especially
about the needle bearings as they do need light
oil. I will likely use 10 weight.

(quoted from post at 21:10:37 03/03/15) I would advise you to use Hytran ultra. It will give you proper lubrication, plus it has addatives to enhanse seal and o-ring life.

ACG,
I agree on the quality of HTU and have stated so in spite of opposition from the "any oil fits" crowd. If he were using hydraulics I would insist on HTU.

I found it interesting to note on the oil for the 801 post Case recommended the 10 wt in the converter as an alternative to the TCH and even 5 wt where 5 was needed in the engine. That was even in a hydraulic dependent unit. That was a new revelation to me and I was there when Case O Matic was new.

It has been said that Cat used a 10 wt in all their crawler hydraulic systems. something I would not recommend for Case systems, HTU is a proven commodity to me.
