731 and the 411

I was making some comparisons of the two tractors and noticed the 731 had a little more speed on the top end than the 411, and I was curious wheather it was the direct drive from the torque converter or a minor change in gear ratio in the pinion gear & bull gears. is there any chance, any one of the years that the 731 was produced the rear end internals would cross over to the 400 tractors? An inquiring mind wants to know

The difference may just be the difference in what the "standard size tire" was. A 13x38, verses 15.5x38. However a 15.5 was a low section tire.

So Loren, that leaves me with the idea that a reasonable amount of internals in the 731 rear end will cross over to the 411. Snow melting yet?

The 730 COM engine was set to run at at 1900 rpms full load, the 400 was only 1500. Direct drive 730's were rated at 1700. I think that is where most of the speed difference comes from. If you want a fast tractor start with the a Rock Island produced tractor. (The 300-630 family) Lots of options to mix and match. 30+ mph is easy to obtain, might not be smart but it can be done.

I am assuming that Chuck was talking about a pre CK 730s. Which had moderate RPM increases and that would also deffinately affect top speed.

oops forgot to drop the bad pinion

Chuck,
Heck no!!, light snow all day today, ending tomarrow morning and another storm front moving in Tuesday, Weather watchers reporting on Friday said we would reach mid 40s Wed.. Tonight they backed off and said 34F on Wed., then dropping the rest of the week.
As for your 411, it is not like Pastor John's SC which you could slide smaller sprockets on the axles and shorten the drive chain to make it go faster. Just give it some more RRRs, and enjoy.

Chuck,
That ring and pinion looks kinda nasty, But presuming that you will not be working your 411 hard, I would dump some diesel fuel in the tranny and have some fun driving the tractor around the yard for a half day, and then open it up and see what things look like after you drain the tranny again. Hope the bearings look better.
