Ream guides?

Is it really necessary to ream the valve guides when you have installed new guides?
The shop here had not heard about that, and they never did so on newer tractors.
This is a Case 1370, and the shop manual says that I have to ream the guides.
How are you used to do?

20 years ago when I did head work we had a reamer that was run through the guides after they were pressed in, I assume that still has to be done. The reamer was available from CASE then. Rod.

If the guide/valve stem clearance is correct, no reaming is needed. If the valve stem/guide clearance is tight or the valve won't fit into the guide at all, reaming or honing will be needed to obtain the correct fit. Usually the stem/guide clearance is around .0015-.003. Check the published specs for the correct stem/guide clearance.

If you ordered guides from case then you will probably need a reamer. If you ordered guides from an aftermarket source chances are they will not need reamed. If the valves fit into the guides then do not worry about them. Use straight 30 weight oil during the warm season will help prevent worn valve guides in the future.
