Hard steel balls of approximate size can be found in ball
bearings. Wrap in several layers of shop towel and squeeze
to crack the outer shell in a good vise. You can also crack the
outer race with a hammer. Be sure to contain the bearing, as
fragments like shrapnel will otherwise be flying all over.
 
I have a W-3 and my manual is a 540 ( I believe that overs both tractors).I haven't even tried to start it yet since I got it down here (Oklahoma) from Massachusetts. So it will be a totally new learning curve for me also. E-mail me if you need any info from my manual.
