Does anyone know what drive (bendix) a MZ4176 starter take?
I went to start my case 300 or 310, 1956-1958 round nose and had the starter stop turning and when I loosened it and the drive gear (bendix) snapped back and I thought it was fixed so a few days later I tried to start it again and it turned over a few times so I took the starter off and disassembled it cleaned it up but the drive gear (bendix) doesn't kick out so I think it needs a new drive gear (bendix). Does anyone know what is the part number for the starter drive gear or bendix or is there an updated one for this starter? I found an MBG4105 a 12v starter local for cheap $50. that I read on this form that it will work on my case the only difference I found is the MZ4176 has a 10 tooth gear and the MBG4105 is a 9 tooth gear. Here is what it said on this form........
Your 210B would have been born with a AutoLite MZ4176 starter, which was 6 volt unit. That starter was also used on the 300 roundnose tractors. Based on my materials the 200Bs were produced as 6 volt systems, while the 300B/400Bs were 12 volt. If your tractor has been converted to 12 volts you could source one of the following:

300B: Delco 1107745, or AutoLite MBG 4105

400B: (Sealed because of COM) Delco 110775, or AutoLite MDL 6019

My tractor is 12v neg ground (I think it was converted)
I have been a mechanic for 38 years have worked on everything from cars to small engines to some larger tractors and I can fix just about anything and need a part number for the starter bendix and if the MBG4105 will work I will grab it just to have it just incase because I know starters for my case are hard to find at least for a decent price. Any help would be appreciated.

It looks like the j&n number on your drive is 220-12038 or a 220-12142. Your rebuilder should be able to come up with that drive. J&N is a auto electric parts place your rebuilder will be familiar with. hth jstpa

The 300 series tractors with gas engine ring gear has 96 teeth. Auto-Lite MZ4176 is the factory 6 volt starter for these tractors. This starter will operate just fine on 12 volt. They are neither voltage or polarity sensitive in this application.

Some 300 series tractors with LPG and high altitude engine have a 124 tooth ring gear. I am not sure what starter these tractors have but it is not the Auto-Lite MZ4176

The parts book lists the 300B series tractors with gas engine ring gear as 124 teeth. There are no other options listed. The pic is the factory MBG-4105 12v starter on my '59 311B.

So that is apparently the difference between the 9 & 10 tooth starter gear.

The parts book lists 400B series tractor ring gear as 135 teeth so I would say that starter is probably out of the running as a drop in replacement also. The 400B starter mounts on the block as opposed to the bell housing in the 300 & 300B series.

In your previous post you mentioned the starter hanging. I suggested that you check you ring gear teeth for excessive wear that can hang the starter. Did the ring gear look ok?

The teeth on the ring gear are fine with no noticeable wear.
