Gunk and Lots Of It

This tractor, a 1370 had a small coolant leak letting anti-freeze drip into the crankcase oil. The owner said he never noticed coolant in the oil and I did not either when I drained engine oil. I did have to poke my finger up into the pan to clear the hole so the oil would drain out. I thought what the he!! is going on. I do not know if some kind of reaction has occurred between oil and coolant but this is the worst mess I have ever seen. This gunk is about like cool roofing tar, it can not be wiped out because it just smears. I believe the owner when he tells me it does get the oil changed at 100 hrs and he has never had a problem draining out the oil. The last pic is most of the gunk I scraped out of the pan with the 1/64 tractor just to show the size of the pile. This engine will be overhauled and actually the crank and brgs looked pretty darn good. These large journal 504's can take a beating and still keep on ticking, Rod.

And the 770 diesel we are rebuilding. Except the centre main turned in the block. So off to the machine shop. There was 11000 hrs on that motor though. The brearings were stamped '71. I think we will go through a lot of brake clean to get all the gunk cleaned up.

Used the wrong oil. Opened my 770 diesel up at about 8000 hours and didn't even have to use a putty knife. Clean as a whistle.I use really good oil.

I can agree ,my429 had that junk under the intake when I did a valve job 40 yrs ago , in defense of penzoil ,, perhapsit shouldbe used no more than twice in amotor , to put that slik coating on the bearings ,,if the valve springs have the remotest possible rust ,, change them out ..

Even Pennzoil will not tar up like that if changed on a regular schedule. That oil was regularly run way over normal hours of operation.
