Early SC at the Yard

Was with a friend today (check out my message in the Tractor Talk board for more photos) picking up parts for his late model JD B, and a manifold for my Case SC that developed a crack... Stumbled across an early SC (Long hood, smooth block, chrome strips and LP converted). Serial number was 45000561SC - makes it quite an early SC... I felt saddened to see it so chopped up with the LP system, but I began to look closer, and the manifold seems to be made specifically for the tractor, maybe aftermarket? I should have gotten a close-up picture of the manifold, but I neglected to. Here it is in it's "lackluster" glory...

This is Biewer's Tractor Salvage in Barnesville, MN. A great time for sure, it saddens me to see all of the relics that are sitting and waiting for a chance to breathe another day.

Just thought i'd update this thread to say that this early sc will be saved. I just went and got it on friday. The motor is loose and i have most of the parts to put it back to gas. I believe the manifold has H & S Ollie Iowa cast into it so definitely is an aftermarket piece. I'm hoping to get to work on it sometime this week. Here are some pics:

Zach. That is going to be a fun project! You folks are lucky having tractor salvage yards around you like that. Here in the pacific northwest, they don't have but maybe one? I know I haven't been able to find them, and most of the old tractor people I talk to order parts from salvage yards in the mid west. Keep us posted with pictures on progress!

What year is this tractor? I had a SC from the first year of production and the side of the engine block was smoother than yours is. Case started adding ribs to the side of the engine blocks for more support when using front mount implements. The early SC's, that didn't have these ribs, would crack at the front corner of the block under stress. Yours looks like case's first attempt to strengthen the block. Newer ones ended up with three ribs.

This is a 1941. There are no stiffing ribs on the other side of the block. The rib you see below the starter is an oil passage. Here are some more pics after i got to work on it some tonight:

Okay, I see that now. I'm sure glad you rescued the tractor. Not many early examples out there anymore. The one I had was pretty rough. I just needed a tractor to use when I bought it and didn't give any thought to the collectability of it at the time. I later traded it to a guy for a VAC-14 with a broken PTO.
