Picked up a 504 that had liquid coming from the exhaust so I tore it down. The gasket I found to be tore around two of the water holes so that could be some problem but on the #4 cylinder their is bad pitting on the sleeve from top to a inch down On probably half the sleeve and some on the piston. (What would cause the pitting on the inside of the sleeve? Ive never seen it their! Would like to know thanks!!

Im thinking that's probably it. Im thinking coolant is the cause of the pitting but its a lot!! On the exaust side of the gasket the rubber around the two water holes were tore / riped. But I wouldn't be surprised that the pitting could be leaking coolant threw to, an im sure the other side of the sleeve is just as bad!

That's what cheap antifreeze will do. Also no water filter. In a diesel, the vibration on the sleeve causes bubbles which cause the pitting. Not sure how, but that's how it was explained to me. You must use the correct diesel antifreeze. Also, those water filters that look like an oil filter. They are s'posed to prevent that.

you may have a bad head gasket allowing a slight amount of anti freeze into the cyl. you will also notice the head being pitted also in the combustion area.
OR it can be cavitation of the sleeves. you will get pitting from the outside in. this is caused by tiny bubbles forming on the outside of the sleeve when the injector fires. this causes a vibration outward and makes these bubbles form. one of the best things to prevent or slow this is to have a good rad cap and always keep the coolant under pressure. never open rad once engine is warmed up as pressure will be lost until engine is shut down and cold. there is special additives also to add to the antifreeze to help prevent this. would need to remove sleeves to check them. also there is extra small coolant filters to control the PH level of the antifreeze to help control cavitation.

Ive already plan on pulling the sleeves an adding a coolant filter, I did that to all my other ones. Just never seen pitting on the inside of the sleeve.

Compressed water can be as hard as steel. That's what probably pitted the inside of the sleeves.
