First is a pic of the 504 deck that needs a good cleaning, traces of some copper coat from the previous installers job can still be seen. This deck is in horrible shape with erosion from the gasket which is very obvious on head ends. Hard to see in the pics. 2cd pic is after clean-up, 3rd is the tools used. 4th is a couple 446's, the ugly one is going to donate its engine to the other one and last is a pic of the donor after teardown.

Do you worry about rounding the corner of the sleeves off with your cleaning tools? Those heads walking on the block can make a mess of the block. That is the reason I always use a good gasket sealer on them. It seems to stop the vibration between the parts.

Darrel, one has to be very careful with the abrasive pad. Over using it will round corners and remove metal. But it is the best cleaning pad I have found that is not extremely abrasive. They work great but you have to use caution, Rod.

Amazing Rod, your giving the 4694 a new lease on life.
Rod, do you ever line bore? Guess I have the counter bore tool.

Gee what you called the "ugly one" is newer, and the older one is sure sharp, there is a lot of 446's around here.

Good post Rod

Dan I do have a counter bore tool which gets used on occasion. I bought the ugly one because it had a good engine and came with a cab that a fella in WY we know would like. The sharp 446 I repainted 5 yr ago and the engine blew shortly after. I have a 60 in deck to install on it. Rod.

Got a 60" deck on my 446. When I got it, one rod and piston were broke into 1" pieces. They mowed with it on one cylinder. Lots of money later and it has worked good for several years now.

Rod, You should take the two 446s and make one of these. This is my 444-4. another project that needs finishing. HeHe Pardon the mess, it's crammed into the celar with the VA and my splitter and a bunch of other odds and ends.

I'm currently working on a 1966 Colt that someone has modified and put a briggs 11hp on and a case 448 hood however I decided since it was already custom might as well make it my own! I bought a 16hp Briggs opposed twin that I mounted up and bought a 220 hood, Im working on modifying some 442 side panels to work with the rig!

1370rod:

One of the best abrasives that I've found is a product called CRATEX . It's a rubber-like compound that has various types & grits of abrasive in it, and comes in rods, blocks, sheets, etc.; just about any configuration you can think of. Great stuff!
