Need help on 2290 powershift

This tractor had some funny powershift problems about 3 years ago, so we split it, and checked out the powershift, put some new parts where it needed some but didn't really find a problem that accounted for the symptoms. haven't really used it since. NOW it wont stop the geartrain when you step on the clutch, but once you weasel it into gear, it works - more or less correctly. Today we put the gauges on it and the only thing we found is NO pressure on C3,in any shift position or clutch position. C1, 2, and 4 all read correctly. To my little mind, the symptoms don't agree here. Anybody know what's going on here??

Allan,

The C3 pressure is essential to both 2nd and 3rd powershift so if you get no reading at the C3 test port you have no second and third range. The pressures can only be checked for the clutches being applied - C1 X- C2 ---- 1 powershift-----C1 x C3-------2nd PS------C2 X C3------3rd PS-------C4-----clutch down-------C2 x C4 Reverse.

Shops have a multi gage set that hooks to all ports at once so swapping gages is not required.

Post pressures in the ports for each range combination 1---2---3---CD----R

180-210 is rps working pressure, I prefer higher end of spec

Saying the trans grinds when the clutch is down is an indication of a C4 problem , either a lack of pressure to apply it, a mechanical problem with C4 or so much drag in some other clutch that C4 cannot overcome it. To make a long story short there is no way that the powershift is working at all let alone nearly right if the pressures are as you say.

Get readings from the ports shown with the trans in the respective gears and get back to us, I am interested in what C4 is with the clutch down. Myself, 1370, Agriking just to mention off the top of my head should be able to make sense once we have updated info,

Thanks for the reply mEL. I pulled the control valve assem tonight and found that the outer gasket had the hole in the wrong place for the c3 test plug. I couldn't believe there was no pressure. So one solved. C4 tested right. 200 lbs with the clutch down, zero when up. the others tested correctly too. So i'm still puzzled but looks like its inside. :( . Any hints on what to check are appreciated.

Got the tractor apart today and pulled the c1 and c4 clutches. Found the rear plate on the c1 - the one that the 3 springs push on worn totally clean on the piston side. is that normal? I think maybe. Kinda looks like it was dragging. C4 looks fine. Haven't gone any farther.
