Terry,

JI Case threshing machines and Studebaker wagons. That is a very unique ad. May I ask how you found it? Don

Although that is an old ad it is not from a dealer
on top it lists that they are an agent, this was
done before a dealer was established in the area,
once enough demand was established the agent
established dealers that worked under them, then
eventually the manufacturer either established a
branch and eliminated the agent or kept the agent
and the dealers worked under them, the agent made
no margins the contracts went to direct to the
manufacturers, the traveling men were not in
anyway connected with the factory, they were paid
from the factory and had no factory trained
support personnel on staff in other words the
payment went direct to J.I.Case then they paid the
Agent on their terms

They typically ran a whare house and accepted shipments from there suppliers, they may even sell two competing manufactures engines, I could show you an example where they sold case and ames but that is copyright and not to be posted. Another thing that you may not realize is that during this time, you did not just whip out your wallet and hand over green dollars, you paid in gold they agent never stocked parts either, you were given a parts book and that"s where you wrote the manufacturer with the part letters called out instead of numbers via a telegraph, basically once it was sold you dealt direct with the factory, if you had a problem the factory sent out a block man if the order was big enought he was also sent out to set up and train.

I have a very old, advertising thermometer hanging on the wall. One of those dealer give away things.

Cowman and Hicks.

I live about 4 mile from that address on there. That is right in downtown Salem. I am also a Studebaker and a Case guy! I wish I could have seen a picture of that in the day! Zane

Sure Don, I found it browsing through a
subscription I have to old online newspapers. Even
if they were not a true dealer it is still a neat
ad. Sorry it took me so long to post.

I am getting old you know!

Later - When I find some more, I will post them
for you.
