COM Questions

This COM would slip quite easy. When driving it and apply the brakes it would not take much to get it to stop in either COM or Direct. You could feel something break loose and start slipping at about the same pull regardless of COM or Direct. Has good COM press at over 1300 RPM. I sort of expected the multiple disc clutch to be bad but everything looks good except the larger ball brg on the output shaft. Any ideas on what is going on here are certainly welcome. The bushing in the output shaft needs replacing and I will replace sealing rings but they all look good. The book says in order to remove the stator, first remove the roll pins, but does anyone know how to remove them? I thought maybe they got tapped down, but they did not seem to move. This is my first COM repair in 20 yrs, your advice will be greatly appreciated. Rod.

Those pins look like a two part pin. Get a good dowel pin punch that will fit the inner pin and drive it out first, then use a bigger punch and drive the second one out. Put the big one in first on reassembly and drive the small one in last. Ran across some of them in a rotary rake once.

Did you have a good flow of oil through the system? You can have good pressure and still have low flow. I had similar problems years ago with a C.O.M. what the problem turned out to be was a blockage in the oil cooler in the radiator.

Yes I checked that before dismantling. Years back I seen a cooler blocked by rubber chunks from the large ring on the converter.

Rod: What model tractor we talking about? At 1st glance, I'd say 800 730 or 830. Hard to gauge "slipping" in fluid drive, but slipping in Direct is serious. The 1st place to look there is the sealing rings on the "Direct Drive" piston. The "Direct Drive" Clutch Plate should definitely be replaced, judging by the wear on the cogs. Even though the plates in the back look good, I lay each one on a flat surface & check for any sign of warppage. Those pins you mention can be difficult, but will drive out w/ a hammer & punch. However, the bearing can be a bear to slide off the shaft. As for pressures, the service manual gets quite detailed, checking pressures @ 3 different places, & various RPM's.

Rod can you please keep us informed at what you find as to the cause of the problem. i have worked on only one COM and it was an 800.

John I will be calling Mon. to order that DD disc and hope you can supply that bushing in the output shaft. A few sealing rings and brgs I need are still available from CASE, so I order those items from local dealer. The disc's in the clutch pack are flat and near perfect. Even the drum they engage is perfect with no grooves worn in it. Rod.

I will post everything that gets done to this unit and the results, this is a EH 830 diesel, Rod.
