6V to 12V Upgrade

Need to replace the two 6V batteries on my 830CK
diesel. I know a lot of guys upgrade to two 12V.
Is it really beneficial or just stick with two good
6V batteries? I'm thinking the factory could have
equipped it with two 12's but they chose to go with
two 6's.

In the old days they went with two 6v connected in a series to get more cranking power than one 12v.

If you change to two 12's. make sure you connect the cables correctly or you will have 24v.

I currently have one 12v battery in my green 4430 instead of the two 6v. I don't use it at all in the winter. I get along fine with it.

We ran the 2 6 volt batteries here in Nebraska never had issues just kept the starters up and connections clean. If you live in a cold climate it might be beneficial to give you a little extra zip and a lil longer cranking ability.

I own a 830 EH with 2 - 1000A bolt terminal batteries in parallel. With the glo plugs only it will start down into the low 30,s. Even after extended heating the system has enough reserve to turn the engine briskly.

When installing the batteries we went to the largest OTR truck cables and grounded the batteries negative to one of the starter mounting capscrews.

The results have been extremely impressive on mine.

I ran my 1030 for years we 1 12v . In the winter I would just plug it in and it still started good downing into the teens. Battiers are much better now then 50 years ago.

We switched from 2-6 volts to 2-12 volts on the 930 many years ago. It really made starting faster and easier but we still had to plug it in below about 35 degrees. Don

I have 2 830's 930, 870, 970, and 2090. I have 1, 875 CCA battery in each of them. I see no reason to have the second battery in them. I always plug them in if below 35 degrees anyway. The one 12 volt battery cranks faster than 2, 6 volts ever did. The 2 sixes would crank them for a longer period before going dead, but if they do not start in the first 6 times over they will not start anyway. Try one, you can always add another.
