Case 530, why would someone do this?

Hello all, my cousin bought a case 530 tractor a while back, said there was something wrong with the brakes when you would back up. He didn't get a chance to tear into it until a week or so ago. He said he thought the brakes were hanging up on it when you would back up, because he said it would bang when you backed up if you hit the brakes. I went down to look at it, he had it in his shop on stands, tearing the brakes apart. I was rolling the tire around while talking to him and could hear something like gears hitting when it was in neutral, loud. I told him we should pull trans cover to find out what the noise was and this is what we found. The retaining bolt on the reverse idler shaft had come out and had been thrown up onto the oil trough that directs oil in the rear end. But the noise I heard was the shifting fork was holding the reverse idler gear against the gear it shifts into, and had ground the reverse idler gear off a good bit. The shifting fork had been cut off and rewelded on (apparently not in the right spot) and the fork was wore badly from holding the gear against the other gear. Any idea why this would have been done? Had a hard time finding the gear but he finally found one, but hasn't been able to find the fork yet. Everyone asks for the s/n when looking for parts, but the panel below the dash where I believe it should be is missing. Tractor drove and worked fine except for the bang in reverse, he wasn't too worried about it though. I should also mention that the trans and rear end were full of hy-tran, which I'm pretty sure that gear drive should have gear oil in it? Never worked on a case except for my grandfather's old 320 backhoe (now gone), trying to keep its cobbled up self running for him while he was alive. Just wondered why someone would have modified that fork, or if they had a problem on those tractors. Thanks

Well, I can answer part of the question as to why it was likely done: Back in the mid 1980's our Case 430 somehow broke one of the shifting forks. I am glad Dad was on the tractor when it happened instead of me as I would have been blamed otherwise. To this day, we still do not know what caused it to break. Dad was very gentle on things, but the tractor was a former state mowing tractor so I am sure it had lots of rough abuse by previous operators.

Dad went to the dealer: The dealer ordered in I do not know how many different shifting forks and none of them were correct and would fit. They ran serial numbers and everything else and nothing come close to fitting (and this was 30 years ago).

We needed the tractor to plant in a bad way. Dad took the broken shifting fork to local weld shop. Weld shop made a special jig to hold the fork in critical alignment while both welding and especially during cool down so as to control warping in all directions. Put the repaired shift fork back in the tractor and it worked good as new and was still in there 10 years later when I sold the tractor after dad passed.

My guess your former owner went through the same mess we did in trying to find a new replacement shift fork without success at the dealer. Unfortunately whoever welded this fork did it all free hand and the welding and cool down process caused lots of warpage and hence very poor final alignment which over time let some parts touch and wear that should not have.
 
The reverse fork could be bent or broken off if "cowboyed" Maybe a cowboy with a welder owned it somewhere in it's life. Hy Tran is fine in both halves of the tranny

I broke a reverse shift fork in our 630 several years ago. Not wanting to pay the CASE price, nor having the time to wait for 1, I welded it back together. It welded back nicely. However, when I installed it, I discovered it was out of alignment. It took several tries, of heating red hot & tweeking, but I finally got it right. I would suspect something similar happened to your 530, except whoever welded it back, didn't take the time to re-align it.
I too shift w/ a gentle hand, so I cannot explain the break. None of the kids were on it, so I couldn't blame them. Come to think about it, I don't think I told them about it. Otherwise I would have had to figure out a way to blame them, because they never would have let me off the hook.
 
This is not a common repair but it is something I have seen several times. If repaired properly and replacements are hard to find for some older tractors repairing is a option. Years ago I myself welded one for a neighbor and to my knowledge it has never been a problem after that.

Rod, also have welded broken forks,working off the gasket surface of the cap with a square I have never had an engagement problem. I have also welded up worn forks where they fit the gear with no ill consequences

The shifting forks and shafts have been changed and some old numbers are unavailable new. Latest ones had the forks secured to the shaft via roll pin.

The older this stuff gets the harder it is to find suitable parts
 
Thanks for the info guys! Judging by the welds this thing has on the loader, it has been abused lol, there is chicken poop welds on every frame member of the loader. I was just trying to help my cousin find even used parts, buy without the serial tag, I can't find the right part number he needs for sure. Don't know much about this tractor, but doesn't it have a different reservoir for the hyd, or does it use oil from the trans/rearend?

The center section has its own level, look ahead of the clutch pedal if it is a standard shift for a angled plug with a short dipstick, if a torque converter drive there is a dipstick on top on the rh side high above the brake pedals.
