The little hydraulic cylinder under the seat on ALL of my AK seats appear to be wet. All but this one that looks dry but was obviously wet at one time. How do they work? What's inside? If I pull the cylinder out....it stays out. If I push the cylinder in....it stays in. There is resistance. Haven't taken any other seats apart to see if the other cylinders act the same.
Are they supposed to have resistance both ways? I presume there should be oil inside? If they're wet...do I presume they've lost their oil? Are new cylinders available for purchase?

The resistance in both ways slows down the spring action of the spring so it isn't so bouncy. If it has resistance both ways it must still be partly good. No resistance means it's shot. It is not designed to support weight, just slow down motion. If it still has resistance both ways I'd clean it up and keep using it.

I just redid the seat on my massey and many parts on your seat appear to be the same as mine. That company must of made seats for different tractors. I've seen variations of it on Massey windrowers, tractors, and even on a Minneapolis Moline.

Got it. Thanks. That's exactly what I wanted to know. I haven't removed the big spring yet. Don't know if I want to. Looks like it could be a bugger to deal with if it has tension.
