Time to relace the 2090 trans housing

This is the damage the internal 3 pt connecting rod does, if the system does not cancel the lifting action properly. We will need to replace the trans and PTO housing. Through the years I have hear of this happening. However this is the first housing replacement that I have done on a 20-2290.

ouch is right, to bad its not 23/2590 I have one that id let you have cheap, I have heard of that happening before though

I purchased a 2290, 8 speed, in 1979. It had been out on lease and came back with housing broken. At that time I was working winters at the dealership, we replaced the transmission housing before it was delivered to me. Cancelling of 3 point was always checked after that. Good tractor, I kept it until I retired a few years ago.

Well, we never had that happen, but we lost our arze doing all the rear differential updates including the lube line and the fix for that problem.

1370 I have seen as many broke as any body, have seen them welded,as bad as it sounds there really is no load on these parts, the load is down ,I have never seen one broke the second time,i guess I don't need to tell you labor involved.i have a 2096 here that they welded the pto and trans case, used for years that way looks like a horror movie with all the weld but I guess i'll kill it. now.

I hate to hear this problem occurred on a 2096 also. According to a service bulletin published about 30 years ago the later tractors had a beefed up casting that was not suppose to break. I guess if the hyd pressure was set higher than specified or a poor cast it could occur. First time I heard of a 96 with that issue. Rod.

Loren you mention those updates, I was the guy appointed to do them all at our dealership. I did a couple dozen and really did not mind the job after doing a few. Kept me busy for a couple months. I do not remember if I was quick enough to beat the hours CASE allowed for the job. Almost always I would find something else to repair to the tractor while at the job. A 2290 back then took 12 grand to fix and that was a huge amount in those days. Even the Service Rep swallowed hard as he signed the warranty paper work. Rod.

Are you looking for a housing? I have one on a 2290 that had a cab fire. I think the whole rear is good and complete. My e-mail is open.

Good morning Rod, Do internal hydraulic cylinders lift the 2pt arms? If so why didn't the cylinders have a shorter stroke?Prior to learning about the relief valve i was probably going to eliminate all the 3pt parts internal and external if possible.I've heard of 2390 with a big 3pt cultivator going across rail road tracks to fast and the upward bounce broke the casting. could this be what happened to the 96series in the earlier post? Darrell

Back in early 80's we had a 2090 blow out the housing. 3 point arms were up too far on a hot day. I don't think it was even running when it happened. After this whenever we walked by a customers 90 series we would lift on 3 point arms to make sure there was free play.

Hi Darrell, I am sure CASE could have done several things to eliminate that problem but apparently did not think it would be as much trouble as it was. The 23-2590's system was a completely different design and very seldom had a breakage problem. Either way these tractors are way to old and CASEIH could care less what occurs to them now. On this tractor will you be using the 3 pt? Rod.

Seen that many times around here even on 2 1896s linkage ball popped off on the 96s. Its a real bad deal.

A big issue for us was locating a machine shop capable of machining the differential. We finally found one but there was always at least 10 day turnaround, and someone wasted a half day traveling from the dealership, to deliver and pick up the housings. Warranty didn't pay for that, and these repairs took up a lot of our shop space.
Also CaseIH didn't allow us to order the repair kits on an as needed baises. They took the ordering and shippind records and packed them all together in one big shipment. Imagin getting that parts bill all on one months statement. On top of that many of the tractors shipped to us were transfered to other dealers for retail sales, and CaseIH didn't use warranty registrations to distribute the parts.

Rod, I would like to be able to use the 3pt.With the relief valve installed that should ease my mind about this happening again. Darrell

Thad , is that the ball on the connecting rod that breaks off? Around here those tractors don't see much 3 pt work anymore, but I guess they can blow a housing while not being used, Rod.

No Rod the 90s had the cable that would break and in the 96 and 94s they replaced it with a linkage. The two 1896s if I remember right a bolt came loose and the other the swivel ball popped off. Had a guy who brought one in once with his hyd oil getting hot. It was over lifting and popping off the hyd relief. He was a lucky guy I guess his pump was weaker than the rearend casting.
