I have a 53 SC that leaks from the cross shaft for the clutch. I understand that the clutch runs in oil. Is there an oil level in the bellhousing area? Is there a seal on the shaft that I need to replace or an oil level too high or a clogged return drain to the pan?

Sounds like a clogged return line - the pan oil should flow in and out and not reach this point to leak.

If you get more than a gallon out of there you have a problem. Someone might have stuck a lining pin in the return hole or something. There are seals on the shaft that are simple to replace. If the seals are bad enough just the splashing in there will leak.

I think there should only be about a quart or less of oil left in the clutch housing once you drain the engine.

To answer your question-- Yes, there are two seals on the clutch shaft. You may be able to remove them without removing the shaft. Chances are the shaft is worn at seal contact area and needs repair also. Part # for the two seals are 488561R1 which replaces the A26859.
