First Diesel.....

Tractor Talk has a good topic going. Maybe should start it down here. I'll list ours. Dad bought a 40 Cockshutt with Buda diesel. Then a 70 JD, and finally a 400 Case and always Case after that. Mine was a 930 Western Special in 1968 and always Case after that.

It would be the 970 for me, for the first 15 years it had to do everything. Now after 30 years of ownership it is still going strong. Rod.

Always had gassers, first a 300 round nose and then a 630. But about ten years ago bought a 1966 830 COM with a loader-great. Now have a 1964 430 diesel-little unusual-, 1968 1030 diesel wheatland/western and a 1969 930 diesel. Still have a gas 300 round nose and 630 utility. Even in east central MN by plugging them in and using the manifold heater and treated diesel I can always get them started even when real cold

After farming with horses, then owning a Huber, then a G JD, my Grandpa bought his first diesel in '47 or '48. It was an Oliver 88 Standard Diesel. I'm told it was the first diesel tractor in the whole community. Just think, a few folks still had a few horses in '47. Many tractors were still on steel wheels. Most tractors were pre war era and we're very cumbersome. Here comes this beautiful sleek green and yellow tractor with a smooth 6 cylinder diesel, 6 speed transmission, hydraulic lift system, independent pto, and a cushioned seat with a float ride suspension system. There's even lights front and back and a toolbox under the seat. My grandpa added a comfort cover for cold weather and an umbrella for hot. He must have been in heaven. It was the last tractor he ever owned and he farmed until his death in 1988.

My Dad's first tractor was also his first diesel. A 1957 Allis D-17. Also pretty spiffy for its time. Power steering, Power shift wheels. Foot and hand clutch with Power Boost (a hi-low shift on the go) , also a sweet sounding 6 cylinder diesel. This tractor came with a four bottom snap-lock plow and a four row wrap around cultivator.

As Dad's farm grew he needed a larger tractor and added a used MM G-705. A big brute of a tractor. 100 Hp. 504 cubes. Dad soon traded it for a brand new Case 1030 Comfort King rowcrop with a factory cab. Same hp as the Minnie but MUCH more nimble and was rowcrop capable. The tractor came home with a 6-16 plow and a 21' Kewanee folding disk. Added later was an 8 row cultivator.

This farm has been Case tractors ever since.
Dad's last tractor before he passed was a 2670.

The Oliver 88, AC D-17 and Case 1030 are still in the family.

Dad's first was an 800d which he only kept for about 2 years then updated to an 830 com eh. Both were bought new. My fist was a 930 ck 8 spd that I bought in 1980 while still in high school

Mine was my 400 that I bought from my grandpa about 3 years ago followed by a 400 super 2 months ago. Love both of them.

I just remembered my Grandfather also had a "500" dsl for his first dsl, he traded in a "LA" for it some time in the late 50's early 60's, he traded it for a 930 6speed ft clutch and used it until he retired,

800B diesel. Towed it from Indiana to Virginia with an F150. The tractor and trailer were more than that truck wanted at times going thru West Virginia.

After dad got burnt my senior year of high school he needed to have a tractor with a cab instead of the old gas 3020jd he had for years so he went to a farm sale and for whatever reason it was his lucky day and things were cheap, he ended up with a 2096 CIH with 4500 hrs on it. Ending up with that tractor in a round about way let me go into farming full time.

Dad bought a rough row cropper 930 around 99. Engine was strong but everything else was tired He worked it over and had a really good tractor for his later years. Had it until he sold out in about 05.

grandpas first was a McCormick WD9 in 52
dads is a 706d bought in 1/1/64 used every week 17240 hours
mine was a 7080 A.C. traded for a 3394

In our family it was a '74 1370. Before that my granddad ran the farm, fairly large acreage at the time, with a Moline 5 Star and a Case 400, both LP. With tractors those sizes, the workers put in a LOT of hours! About 10 years before retiring, when I was 1 year old and the 1370 was 2 yrs old, he bought the like-new 1370 and put it to good work for a decade. I have that tractor today (along with his DCs, the 5 Star and 400 LP were sold when I was young). Planning to run it in the fields again next year, for the first time in a long time.

IH TD 14 crawler in 1946 bought by my grandpa. He traded that in for a TD 14A in 1953 and bought a used JD R in 1956 for a 2nd tractor. First diesel tractor on tires for us was a 1952 WD9 bought new by great grandpa. He traded a distillate burning W9 for it. Only gas tractor we had during the 50s was our 1949 Farmall M.

My Dad's first diesel was a 33 Massey Harris row crop. Good tractor, but don't ever run it out of fuel! Trded for an MF 65 diesel---later learned that only 46 33 diesel row crops with LPTO and 3 pt. were made....to have it now...sigh. Ben

The first one I remember getting on the farm was when dad brought home a JD 70 diesel. I also remember watching it break the crank the next fall while chopping silage. The first diesel I ever bought was an IHC 560. Absolutely the WORST tractor I ever owned... I traded it 2 years and 3 head gaskets later on an IHC 826. That was a great tractor!! I am still looking for my first Case diesel... One of these days... :)

Dad's was a 1964(?) 830 COM bought in about 1973. My first diesel (and my first tractor) was a 1974 1070 bought in 1984 with 2800 hrs. Still use it, has about 7500 hrs. Since have added 1210, 1494, 2094, mx120, 2096, 2394, IH 3488, White 2-105.

Dad's first diesel was a new 630 case in 1964. I was 9 years old and had helped farm for a couple years plowing with a Super C IH and a H IH. I thought the 630 was fantastic pulling our new Case disk. He bought the Case because I could push the hand clutch with my foot to engage as I couldn't hardly push the pedal without getting off the seat. A year later he traded the 630 for a new 730 diesel and I was hooked. Still have the 730. When I was 18 I rented a neighbor farm and bought a new 1070 and had a turbo put on at the dealers. Wish I still had it. Great tractor except for the bugs from the fender lights.

Well a few years ago I paid $1000 to clean out a barn that was full of scrap iron, a junk Big 400, and a basket CASE 530 diesel. I sold all of the scrap and parted out the 400 which netted me about $1600.00. I still have as yet to put the 530 back together. It had new pistons, sleeves, and bearings installed, but the project ended there. I will probably pull it all apart again just to make sure that everything was put together correctly and hopefully it will run. I have never had a diesel so it will be interesting to see of I can make it run. Zane

That is same as me, I was helping Dad, at 6 yrs old, driving an IH H, I turned too sharp and turned over a wagon with oats in it. Attempting to move the wagon to where he was with a loaded combine hopper. Anyway, He soon brought a Super C for me to use. The H was tricky, I couldn't reach the clutch and brake at the same time !! Legs too short! would jerk it out of gear, then go for the brake..
Later He bought a JD-70 diesel, even later a IH 656 diesel. I was intrigued with the 70, having a 4 cyl 'pony' motor to start the 2 cyl.... All I have is his 'hand-me-down' Case DC. love It !!
