930 cold starting how easy is a 930 to start in 30 - weathe

the diesels were a littel hard to start if they are not pluged in but if they are pluged in and you spray a littel ether they should start they are good tractors though

I'm going to start a war again, but here goes. A 930, because it is a Lanova Diesel, and compared to today's Diesels, can be hard to start. With 2 excellent Heavy Duty Batteries, & heads that have not had the valves & seats ground, or not pounded, a 930 will start down to 40 degrees F, easily. Below that, you might need the manifold heater. A 930 that is need of head work, poor batteries & poor battery cables, will be a hard starter. Here goes,; never, ever use Ether in a CASE Lanova Diesel. You will crack a head or sleeve.

I use a tiger torch and a couple of lengths of stove pipe with an elbow on the end to warm up my diesel truck with no heater. NO ETHER needed. We used this method up north in the real cold to start a lot of equipment. There is no flame on the engine so no problem with fire.

I had a 930. Cold starting problems start when the temp gets below 50. I suggest an external block heater that connects into heater hose ports having pipe threads. I have found freeze plug heaters to be troublesome and hard to replace. The external units are easy to replace and quickly start to sizzle when plugged in. No need to wait and listen intently to verify the heater is working.

Cross-port fuel injection squirts a stream of fuel across the cylinder and into a stone-cold precombustion chamber that tends to cool any hot compression air that enters into the small opening in the precombustion chamber.

Old Caterpillars had precombustion chambers and that system would handle dirty fuel so it was reliable. However, there needed to be a gasoline starting engine to crank the diesel engine a minute or more to generate some heat in the cylinders.

I agree with Ron, nothing works quite as well as an external block heater.....and in addition to starting easily, the engine is already halfway to operating temperature.

I know a guy with a 730CK it won't start below 50 degrees. I know the pump hasn't been rebuilt in decades.

he went and bought a new Massey tractor to fed cows with

never was around a 30 series that would start easy in cold weather.

My 830 will start down to about 30 with just the manifold heater. But it had a bottom end over haul a couple of years ago. I also have two semi truck batteries in it too. I don't know why all batteries don't have treaded posts. I also have a tank heater on it that after an hour will move the tempature gauge. With that it will start at -20.

I have a 66 930 gas it likes the cold, starts good. It runs better in cold weather than when its hot out. Now that gas prices dropped. Ill use it more, because It loves gas
