EDSC-7 mower

Finally got my EDSC-7 mower operable. I bought this about 2 years ago. It was a basket "case". It had a broken pulley and a few other missing parts. Made a new pulley and replaced all of the sickle knives and guards. Trial one didn't go so well. The outer race spun in the housing and trashed the pto shaft. I didnt know it at the time but it was also bent. Made a new shaft and trial two went much better. I need to fix the outer shoe and fabricate a new guard for the belt. I have the grass board and stick and the pto guard. It mows great just playing around in the yard. I'm still trying to figure out how to run it. The book that I have for the previous series mower, better than nothing at all, says to run the tractor at pto speed which I interpret as wide open. My dad and another buddy say that the engine should be idiling. So I'm not sure what to do. Any thoughts???

Here are a few from the archives. How low are you running the bar? I understand the pto rpm is 540 @1450 engine rpm and your 411 ? Chuck

I've got a complete, although well wore and more
than a bit baggy,EDSC-7 if you'd like any pics of
the belt guard. I've also an owners manual and a
parts book along with a 2 page sales brochure if
you'd like anything copied. I've never used my
mower for much as it's so wore, it shakes the
tractor to oblivion

I see left handed threads there. I know how fun they can be.
Also, sickle bar mowers foul with grass easily if you run them slowly, and they shake themselves apart if you run them faster than they were designed to run. If you want to be able to mow at any descent groundspeed, then you will need to have the pto running at 540 rpm, not faster and not slower. Also, the mower must be in tip top shape or you will be constantly frustrated with either mechanical failures or fouling.

I destroyed one of those when I was about 10
years old. Hooked a bridge piling when I was
headed home.

I find it interesting that people complain
about how hard it is to mow with a sickle
mower. If they are set up correctly, they will
mow as well as anything out there.
To really learn how to set a mower up
correctly, go find an old horse drawn mower,
and tinker with it until it mows perfectly,
then run your PTO driven one. Biggest thing I
see with mowers, is they aren't timed, or the
out side of the bar is hanging back. Get those
2 things fixed, and the guards and sickle
sections don't always have to be perfect.

As a couple of the others have stated the PTO
needs to be turning at 540 which for most tractors
is essentially wide open throttle. Never operate
one at Idle unless your trying to make your day
miserable. Also one other tip make sure your bar
has some Lead in it, meaning the shoe at the end
of the bar should be forward of driven end of the
sickle at any given point in time.

I use my EDSC7 to mow about 15 acres. I do not run her wide open probably about 2/3 throttle but I mow in second gear...More for my comfort as the fields are rough. I have a patch with some sort of viney/running weed...she doesn't like that. I got some old Case stone guards and then looked with no success for replacement ledger plate. Finally got some cheap blue stone guards at TSC drilled out the rivets and transfered the ledger plates to the Case stone guards (some filing required). All nice Case stone guards now and a new cutter bar from Webb Sickle Service. I have scanned in several manual pages that detain setting register and lead if you would like them.

I have NEVER EVER run a pitman stick mower at wide open. Mowed with 1 for well over 40 years. You run that speed, and will shatter a pitman stick the first time you hit short, tough grass.

Guys,

Thanks for the advice. Based on what I've read it sounds like I have everything set up correctly, lead set, knife timed, slop out of the parts, etc. I was just playing around with it in my buddies yard and it cut great and doesn't shake. I just wasn't sure how fast to run it cause I was getting conflicting information. It took 2 days to make the pulley and another to make the shaft with the left hand threads so I don't want to mess it up. I will say that it takes a while to get used to driving with 7' of bar hanging out there. If someone could make a paper template of the belt guard on their's and snail mail it to me it would be appreciated.

Thanks again,

Eli
