52'-54' SC Floor Board Slots?

Does anyone know what the slots on the outside sides of the 52'-54' SC and DC tractor floorboards were used for? These are the four slots on the vertical outside edge of the floorboards. Mine have small pieces of angle iron bolted through them.
I thought that I might make a sun shade out of an old boat canopy and mount it there.

The only thing I can think of the slots are used for is on the late S and D eagle hitch tractors the fenders have 2 carriage bolts that go from the fenders to the floor boards. Here's a pic
