clutch disc wear

So I managed to get my 830 comfort king 8 speed spilt last night after having some clutch issues, I have never done a tractor clutch before so maybe its not uncommon but the pressure plate side of the disc was paper thin, while the flywheel side still looked ok. Everything looked and moved freely.. should I just chaulk it up to driver error, and riding the clutch to much? It was replaced maybe 500 hours ago, I use it for moving snow mowing and disc a small arena, not to hard of a life thats for sure?

Kevin, Just make sure the shaft splines are not worn, the plate should release evenly if the plate can move easily on the spline. If you get a plate from Case, after installation remove the 3 shipping bolts which hold the plate compressed till installed.

If the flywheel shows much wear have it resurfaced by someone familiar with the tractor plates and machining the area where the plate bolts as well as the worn friction area. Whatever is taken off the friction area should also be taken off the step so the plate retains its proper spring tension

It has happened that people have put the plate on and not removed the bolts and had to re split to remove the bolts.

I guess it is a silly question but were those bolts removed last time or where they not installed in your plate. If not removed and restricting the pressure plate movement it could explain your extremely short clutch life.

I didnt do the clutch last time so Im not sure what you mean by the 3 shipping bolts? In order for me to move the tractor around to the shop I had to reach in and loosen 3 bolts that were installed on each finger of the pressure plate. They had a nut around a set screw. Are those what should be removed these after installation?

No, those were the adjustment for the fingers, if those bolts were left in that I mentioned they would be midway between the fingers and have a 9/16 head and I think they go into the large holes where the springs are positioned , maybe with a large flat washer. If there are no bolt heads between the fingers you are fine. Just trying to figure out why the clutch life was so short.

Once you get the flywheel resurfaced and the new stuff installed, the clutch pedal free travel should always be maintained as per instruction manual, a free travel of two inches will be fine but if the pedal free travel gets against the floorboard wear will accelerate rapidly as the pressure plate will not fully engage.

Be sure to do as I said about the flywheel as what you experienced with the fingers is highly unusual and a badly worn flywheel will cause the fingers to be badly out of position.

will do thanks, Now should those fingers be adjusted before putting the tractor back together or are they "set" from the factory?

when you get a new or reman from Case they are preset. I suppose aftermarket are as well
