Charging system for an 800

Tell which is the more practical way to go Rebuild
the generator, and new voltage regulator, or just
put a single wire alternator on it. Its a daily
user, and I HAVE never had much luck with
generators.
I am putting the biggest set of 12 volt batteries
I can in her, to try to get her to start batter,
and want it to stay charged.

The only reason I would even consider a generator would be if you have a very nice restored tractor, and you are a (correct) police officer. Alternator will cost less, be more reliable, and charge more amps.

Yes on the alternator. try for one for a Chevy pickup. It will have more output than a generator and are cheaper.

Alternator period! You can fight generator brushes etc etc forever. Keep the gen and reg intact for the tractor but don't look back. Personally I would not use the one wire street rod app, particularly in a Case low rpm engine. I had one 20 years ago on my SC, and you had to rev up against the gov to get it to energize. I prefer the 3 wire GM and I energize it off my hour meter. All 4 daily use tractors use them. SC, 310B, 400 and an 830. You can also use a very inexpensive diode kit if you don't want to wire off the meter.

67 Chevy probably has an external regulator. Move up into the 80's and get GM alternator with internal regulator

I agree with 3 wire over 1 wire

As an aside, our local alt/starter electrical everything shop sells rebuilt 10 series alt for under $50, the diode kit is 9. The lower amperage ones are all you need unless you're all decked up with halogen lamps

The higher the output the higher the cost. An alternator for a non air conditioned vehicle is what to buy. I have one tractor with a smaller pulley and one with the standard gen pulley and both work well.

I would go with the alternator, I would get one in appx. 60 amp capacity.

Some will disagree but I would put a heavier wire from the alternator to the dash gage and from the other terminal to the starter. 10 ga. should be sufficient. you can leave the other wire also if you wish. The original charge wire is marginal for the increased current the alternator will put. I did this to my 830 diesel when adding the alternator.

I vote for the alternator. use the original wire to go directly from alternator output to gauge then use a second bypass wire from alternator output to starter solenoid terminal. the full 60 amps won't all have to go though the old wire and old 30 amp gauge. ( I assume there is a 30 amp gauge)
