Re: CASE 4490

Believe them, the 4690's smoked. CASE squeezed all they could out of the 504 for that tractor. What I did to help a tiny bit, was to advance the pump timing somewhat more than the book called for.
Having said all that, we had a distant customer, working w/ a local diesel shop near him, search out a larger turbo to fit, & he said it cleared up most of the smoke.

A number of years ago a customer with a 4690 brought a different turbo to me he wanted installed on the tractor. Everything fit well but I remember I had to raise the air filter because the compressor housing was larger. He claimed that turbo cleaned up most of the smoke and lowered exhaust temp. I will see if I can locate any info or model of that turbo and post later today. Rod.

Schwiter No. 193876 or Hy-Capacity part No. 830-525 should be the same. These are new turbo's with a suggested list price around $800. Case Nutty has experience with the Hy-Cap. No. and mentioned they do indeed help. Rod.

Big variance between static timing and running timing on Bosch pumps. Worked on a 4690 that was static timed at spec 27 degrees but actual timing showed 18 degrees with a quality light. Tractor had the 3LM Switzer, rebuilt pump, but still ran hot and smoked badly.Timing lights can be rented from Spencer Diesel for $50(ask for Joel) Have checked other tractors and timing will vary from dead on to off 10 degrees, seems to be a prob on big cam Bosch pumps especially.

We static timed the 504 but out of interest we tried a couple of different positions to see if the smoke cleared, we found there was a slight improvement I think ( it was a while ago) with advancing the pump, but we didn't want to do do any damage to motor so left at spec setting.
The reason I'm chasing down the turbo path, is because in the last couple of months I have had a jcb 8250 faastrac blow a hose clamp on a silicon hose going to intercollegiate that sounded like I'd blown a tyre on the truck and a 9750 sts that pushed a hole in a silicon hose coming out of the turbo. It was a Sunday so we tried taping it up with duct tape, blew a hole threw it in minutes.
Now we tested the boost pressure on the 4694 and never go more than 3 psi post turbo

Hi rod
I went to purchase a Borg Warner 193876, and in our city there is only one turbo supplier who wanted $1440 rebuilt. I thought that was a bit pricey.
What were these turbos off of originally do you know, so I may be able to track something else down
Thanks for the help

These are new turbo's and as far as I know were not used as standard equipment on ag tractors but I could be wrong. My understanding is they were developed as a high altitude replacement for the commonly used air research turbo's used as standard equipment on lots of tractors. I could have one sent to you for $800 plus a little frt. Rod. 1 507 926 5229.

I'm in Western Australia, that's why I tried locally first. I imagine the freight from the us won't be cheap.
I tried a few places today so I'll know a bit more tomorrow. But everyone was asking what is it out of. I thought that may help but if it's not an ag turbo it may be harder to find. And I may take you up on your turbo. Any ideas on freight?
Thanks paul
