Hello,

Have a CASE 4490, wit PTO. I am having a terrible time with it blowing black smoke, starts good. Not sure where to look or start. Have checked air inlet, looks okay, filters okay.. Not sure what to look for or do next.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is my baler tractor for my Hesston 3x3 baler.

thanks

David

if the turbo checks out to be good ( have seen them go and do this myself too very good place to start) look at the front end of the intake manifold and make sure the plug where a air cleaner hose for a non-turbo'd engine would hook we had a 2 year old 1470 blow that out and like casecollectorsc said smoke and no power, I think the 2470 used the same basic type intake with a plug, have also seen a fuel rack stick in full fuel mode and do this too, could be a internal pump issue also good luck cnt

Thanks for the input, but what do I look for on a bad turbo? Do I need to pull the exhaust side also. I have looked at the intake side of it and it looked okay.

Have to actually try and spin the turbo. My 4490 was previously hauled without covering the exhaust and spun the turbo without oil pressure. Locked up tight!!! Looked fine but would not spin. Either exhaust or intake parts need to be removed to get to the turbo, unless you can remove the short hose from the air filter to the turbo. Its tight but CAN BE DONE. Black smoke poured out of mine and new turbo cleared it all up. Great tractors.

Another thing you can check is at times I see the problem with corn leaves getting sucked into the radiator area and then they get up into the air induction precleaner plugging it. With this restriction the engine smokes a lot even though the air filters are perfectly clean. Its easy to check, grab a flashlight, go to the upper radiator corner an look into the air intake. Make sure it is clean in there. Even those damn mice will build a nets in there. Rod.

If it is your turbo replace it with a 3LM466. It'll give you more air to
give you a better burn on your fuel reducing black smoke. You'll
pick up another 10 horse and also lower you exhaust temp. You will
give up a little low end torque but not much

Also we found steel reinforcing ring in plastic first piece of inlet at right top of radiator(same area someone talked about corn fodder)was turned an was plocking air flo.

took off both ends of the turbo, it turns, everything looks okay. Talked with a mechanic that works on these tractors and said basically the same thing everybody else has said, it is the turbo. He said that even though they look okay, they "break down" inside. I will let you know what happens.

Thanks

David

Find you a local mechanic that has a diesel timing light and have him check the advancement on the pump while it is running. We have a 4690 that you can set the pump with the engine stoped and when its running it is ten degrees off. With the timing light you can see where it is running and set it properly after you figure out how many degrees its off. This may not be your problem but I would check it just in case it helped ours a lot!

My case 2670 was doing the same thing, lots of smoke and was even using oil, checked turbo and looked o.k. but decided would change it out anyway as if it wasn"t there I had engine problems on a recent overhaul. changed out turbo and smoke dissapeared and the oil didn"t !!

Do you have the exhaust aspirated precleaner on that
one. They plug up really bad and are difficult to
clean. Corn silks and husks were the worst around
here. Also, have seen the baffle in muffler let go
and block exhaust then turbo won"t spin due to the
back pressure.

hi there
You mentioned in the 4490 post about replacing a turbo with another size. Do you know if that would work for me.
I be got a 4694 and ever since I have had it it has smoked. Everybody says its normal but I don't believe them.
I have had the turbo, fuel pump, injectors overhauled. I have run it without the air filter and the inter cooler on to check for restriction, no difference. We have checked the timing and it's seems right. I still believe it's not getting enough air.
Any thoughts?
