case 400 standard hyd fitting for remotes

Hello all,
i am working on a 400 for brother, but i was wondering if you could tell me what the long fitting on the top left outlet is in the remote hydraulic system on a 400 standard with dual remotes? this fitting is extra long and looks to have a slotted screw in the center of it, it sticks out to the left side an extra inch or more from the other 3 swivel fittings on the remote hoses. is it the system pressure releif? or some odd fitting that someone at one time put on it?
thank you very much.

This fitting contains the speed regulator for the eagle hitch. The purpose of it was to prevent the eagle hitch from dropping too quickly and damaging an implement. Inside this fitting is a spring and piston. When you raise the hitch, the piston moves out of the way and allows it to lift quickly. However, when you lower the hitch, the piston seats and the hydraulic fluid is forced through an orifice to restrict the flow. You can adjust the amount of restriction with the big screw on the end. The little hex screw on the side is a stop to prevent the big screw from falling out. When you back the big screw all of the way out to the stop, the speed regulator provides very little restriction and the fitting works like the other three fittings on the pump. Also, there is an o-ring inside this unit which can be replaced if it is leaking fluid around either the stop screw, or around the big screw on the end.

thank you very much. funny, his tractor doesn't have the eagle hitch, it only has parts of the eagle hitch, like this part and the angle irons on the bottom where the arms bolt to, but no roll bar or anything, someone must have replaced parts of this tractor at some time in the past i would expect. thank you very much. is it possible to remove this fitting and replace with a standard swivel hyd fitting or is it some special thread or style?

thank you very much.

It just occurred to me that your tractor may not have had an eagle hitch. In that case, the entire pump or the fitting must have come from an eagle hitch tractor. However, it could still be useful if you want to control the lowering or raising speed of a remote for some reason.

You can replace this fitting with another case fitting (like the other ones) if you want, or you can just loosen the locknut and back out the big screw until it bottoms out on the stop. Either way will give you the same effect. If you do remove the fitting, there will be a spring that will push it outward and may fall out. Also, there is a 1" long X 1/8" diameter (approximately) pin which may fall out when you remove the fitting.
I doubt if you will be able to replace the fitting with anything other than another case fitting.

Christopher is correct that the fitting you are asking about is to control the speed at which the eagle hitch will drop. On non eagle hitch tractors this fitting was still used on the lower set of outlets to control the speed that an attached implement would drop. For example if you had a pull type hydraulic lift plow you would not want that to drop too fast or you may break the points off the plow. Although they look similar the pumps and the operation of the control levers for the bottom outlets are different between eagle hitch and non eagle hitch tractors. I can find the parts diagram if you would like. You can not replace this fitting with the standard elbow because the speed control fitting is larger where it screws into the pump.
