Well had time to lkook at the 4490 that blew black smoke. I replaced the filters and checked flow. Today I went after the air side . I found the turbo frozen and would not turn. This turbor is about 3 years old. I will get a different one .but do you think caused the problem.Jerry from Ohio

Turbo's for the most part are very trouble free. Ingesting debris in the air stream will damage turbo and can also cause engine damage. Dirty oil or improper shut down would be the most likely cause of a stuck turbo failure as yours. And if I had to guess my money would be on improper shut down as the most likely culprit. Rod.

Turbos will quit very quickly with no oil. Check to see. If oil line is connected AND working. They only have one moving part. Some owners will crank engine with stop cable
pulled out for a few seconds just to allow oil pressure to build up to turbo bearing before ignition occurs. Years ago CASE would put plastics over exhaust pipes of brand new tractors so wind created from being hauled would not blow turbo blades backwards without oil pressure. 4490 is a great tractor. I wish I had one.

Saying improper shutdown means not allowing turbo to properly slow down and cool down before stopping engine. The turbo continues to spin for a small period of time after the engine is stopped. Stopping a engine before doing so allows a hot turbo to spin a longer time with no oil. By not allowing for a slowdown and cool down normally does not seize a turbo quickly. It just shortens the operating life of turbo's. Rod.

Rod, I let the tractor run for a couple of minutes before I shut off the engine. The tractor has great oil pressure, and the air filters were clean. The tractor was serviced this spring . I change oil and filters every year, It only gets maybe 50 hours use. I am going to check for oil flow to the turbo. Thanks guys for your response. Jerry from Ohio

I had that exact thing happen to my 4490. Lesson I learned from and old truck hauler. Previous owner had it hauled 150 miles and the turbo spun during hauling and it locked up due to no oil. We ALWAYS put duct tape on the exhaust pipe when hauling turbo tractors.
