Last few rows of corn...

Just about done with corn. 1665 and 1660 did good. Had to replace the thresher drive belt and unplug the grain conveyor on the 1665 and replace a tire on the 1660. Case 306 and JD 643 cornheads did good also. Always wish I had another 100 acres to do when almost done.

Good to hear you are finished Steve. Can be proud of that pair of combines for another successful harvest. We know there has to be just a handful of operators left in the US that rely on CASE machines of that vintage for their harvest. Good job and pics, Rod.

Steve, what a impressive site! Glad you too have gotten through harvest! Sounds like a good year for you other than the repairs but heck you could have had those issues with a newer machine, I always Love to see the "real" CASE combines at work, great pics thanks for sharing

Do you notice a difference in header loss between the 2 heads. I ran the 306 for 20 years, now using the 643 Deere. I seem to notice more ears bouncing off the 643 than I did the higher designed 306. I have the metal risers on the snouts & the rubber flaps, but still see an occasional ear bouncing off.

You are right. Slowed the JD head down, but the Case does seem to save more ears. I wish the 306 had the enclosed gearcase like the JD. 10 1" bearings per row to replace when they give trouble.

One of the better crops we've had lately. Need more horses and bigger hoppers. The 1665 has the heavier drive axle 10" farther forward and makes carrying a big load easier. Have to find time to get the other 1665 going.

Good for you for beating old man winter. It is a pleasure to see those real Case combines in action. Thanks for posting. Don

I used to keep the bearings greased where they were greaseable. Can't remember if they all were or not. If they weren't, I'd oil them w/ an oil can. Drizzle oil on the shaft into the seal & watch the seal suck it in. I'd always replace a non-lube bearing w/ a re-greaseable one, when they had to be re-placed. Snouts on the 306 were a pain to remove for servicing.
I was told by a CASE engineer, years ago, that Deere bought the prints & patents from CASE for the 1665 Combine & 306 Head. My 7720 measures 52" inside. Just sayin'.

Couldn't agree more on the need for a bigger hopper. But, I never had a complaint with the power of that LH318 engine, even w/ the chopper, except 1 time when I put new Champion plugs in it. Ran like crap & an old time Chrysler man told me to throw the new Champions away & replace them w/ Autolites. I always used Autolite plugs after that, real copper wires, & a "Hi Boost" coil.
