1953 SC, exh. manifold: is hole in elbow normal?

Home obligations lightened up enough to get my 1953 SC converted to distributor ignition. Whew. Pretty easy; runs good. I notice in my exhaust manifold, under the round elbow where it turns up vertical to accept the muffler, there is a small, round hold allowing exhaust to, "puff," out. Then, somewhere on-line, I see another just like it, with what looks on that one to be the same hole and intentional.

Is this normal? Or is it that they all seem to burn a hole there?

I'm confused,
Dennis

Yes, this is normal. Case didn't equip their tractors with a rain cap until the big 400 came out. Any water that fell down the muffler just ran out the hole. It worked great until some leaves/pine needles/tree seeds/acorns got in during long term outdoor storage and plugged the hole.

Well, good. I'm impressed. So it just sounds a bit noisier this way....

The longer I have it the better I like this tractor. It does have a Wagner loader, and the nose, "snout," casting has a break because of it. Strap banded to hold, (which works), but I have an entire replacement casting to fix it right. Might be a big job though and I'll have to take the loader off to do it. Best bet is to probably never put it back on for the sake of the future of this front end. Dennis
