Hello all,

Making progress with my sons restoring a 53 VAC. I just put in a new Camshaft. Question....do i simply get the #1 to TDC, and then simply align the marks on the cam/crank gear? Someone told me that the valves have to be aligned correctly as well, is that correct? What do i do with the Rocker arm as far as getting it installed properly? maybe i need a sequential list of what to do
THanks Bill

Bill, you really need a service manual. This will answer every question that you just asked, and a lot more that you will need answered later. "JENSALES" prints a very complete service manual for the late-series VAC tractors. Also, you can view a free online parts manual by accessing the "parts store" portion of the "CaseIH" website. Also, be careful of the connecting rod bolt torque, the later-series engines use a smaller bolt which will twist off if you use the early torque specification.

Chris,

I did purchase a Service manual online, but it was very general, and stated "Remove nut, remove lifters, remove push rods" etc, nothing very specific.

First, you should insert the camshaft with most of the valve mechanism removed. You need to have the lifters installed in the block and held up so that they will not interfere with the camshaft while you insert it. This is best done with the block upside-down.
When the camshaft and crankshaft are both installed in the block, the timing marks on the gears must line up. The details about aligning the timing marks can be found in your service manual.
After you have both the camshaft installed and the head installed (with valves in place) on the block (with the gasket in place and the head bolts torqued), you can then add the pushrods and bolt in the rocker shaft. After the rocker shaft is installed, you can then set the tappet gaps on the rockers. To set the gaps properly, you must have the crankshaft in the correct position. Once you get this far, please come back and ask for specific instructions on setting the tappet gaps.

Great, Mike, I have both the shafts installed. I have the markings on both gears lined up.

Now just because i have the cam/Crank Markings lined up does not mean i an good yet, correct? i might not be on the compression stroke yet, right?
How do i do that ?
Thanks Bill

You don't have to worry about whether you are on the compression or exhaust stroke until you time the distributor (or set the tappet gaps). Getting the timing marks lined up properly takes care of the cam timing.

When reassembling parts, my son and I noticed that the "Parts diagram" shows a VT 3220/VT3373 and VT3380 that appears to go on AFTER we put on the VT 3225 gear. However, we don't recall seeing such parts when we took it apart. So either our Case VAC is a bit different from the diagram, or the diagram is showing us stuff that might be internal... As far as we know, we put the Crandshaft gear on, and the Pulley goes directly over it. I can send a picture, if you think it might help
