Case 1070 pto question

I am looking at a 1070 with 3870 hrs on it. The guy said the pto works but doesn't shut off unless there is a drag/machine to slow is down/stop it. What would be the issue with this and cost/ease to fix?
Thanks in advance
Matt

It could be any of several things, improper cable adjustment , a worn out brake shoe inside or warped plates in the clutch. Plug off the line on the RH side of the pto casting and see if it still runs. You could also T a gage into that port to see if there is pressure there when running. There should be none when the pto lever is disengaged.

Check cable adjustment behind the bracket on the flow divider behind the filters, the cable should travel full out till the spool stops and clear in till it stops by bottoming in the valve.

The PTO works from flo divider pressure as does the transmission so their pressures should be the same 190-----210 lbs if you want to check it.

If you do have to take it off to replace the plates and reseal the unit replace the brake even if it looks good as slipping the brake will glaze it besides if it a very early tractor the design was changed to give more reliable braking.

If you don't replace the brake you will get a chance to do it all over again, don't ask how I know.
