David Brown 990

Thinking about buying a David Brown 990 and would appreciate any input. I currently have an International 674 but I'm looking for something in better overall shape, and that starts fairly well in winter. Tractor will be used for upkeep of 50 acres, including brush hogging, blading, and hauling firewood. Anything to look out for in this model? Owner says it's an 8 speed but according to tractordata.com they were only available in 6. Comes with a factory mounted front loader and only has 1400 hours. Great tires and tin. Would 5,000 be a fair price? Also any idea what the weight would be with loaded tires? Current owner thought it's around 8,000 lbs, but I was hoping to transport with a car hauler with 3,500 lb axles. Thanks in advance for any and all help.

They are either 6 or 12 forward speed. There are no 8s.

A basic tractor is only a little of 5000# Fully loaded tires will get you to 6000-6300 depending on size. A loader would be another 1000.

They were built over a 20 year span, lots of changes along the way that effect value. A picture would help.

Don't trust an hour meter, cables can break, tachs can be replaced. To verify those low hours you need someone who really knows that tractor to get a feel for the wear.

Does it have a hydraulic pump driven off the front of the engine for the loader???

The tin appears to have been repainted, the decals are wrong. I have its twin here, original decals would have looked like:

Not a bad looking tractor. Not sure what the loader is, doesn't look like any I have had on a 990. All I have experience with mount only to the side of the frame, that appears to run to the back of the tractor.

Thanks for your help. I'm not sure about the
hydraulic pump for the loader, haven't looked at it
in person yet. Talked to him on the phone last night
and he said the only problem is the tilt on the
bucket leaks down. Seems to be a decent price to me,
but I know almost nothing about these tractors.
Planning to take the day off on Friday and see if
it's worth picking up.

That would beat the high end of normal price in my area, but anything DB goes low here. I wouldn't be scared of buying it if it starts and runs good. Try the tranny and brakes if you can and run it around. Anything major should stand out. They are good, solid tractors, just built British style which means a little different than we do it.

I don't know what kind of loader that is, it isn't a DB for sure.

That is a case 56 or 60 loader.Have a 60 on one of my 990's and a Farmhand 22 on another. Case will pick-up more. Decal could be right for a 1976. My neck of the woods a $7500 tractor. Real popular tractors.I have 885,6-990's,2-995's,1200,1210, and a 1290 plus a 2090.

Definitely not a 56 or 65. May be a 60, but never seen one around here.

The decals I have a picture of are original from a 750 hour 1976 990 a couple years back. The paint looks too "white" though maybe just sun bleached.

$7500 is unheard of around here for any DB. A real nice one might bring $4K.

RG,have seen same yr tractors with different decals. No argument on price.Different areas different prices.I have a 77 I will look at and see which decal is on the hood.Ever seen a 990 with factory flat top fenders?Looks like a 995.Have some lit from mid 70's for these tractors, maybe can look and see if pics of decals.

(quoted from post at 13:55:44 11/06/14) Ever seen a 990 with factory flat top fenders?Looks like a 995.

There is one running around my area with the big fenders. I wouldn't mind having them. Sometimes I hang my hands over the edges of my clamshells, when a finger brushes the tire it wakes you right up.

I looked up the decals In the parts book. The "Case" ones say "for North America only". The DB-Case ones have no such notation.
