1030 engine quit today

Went to a plow day with my recently acquired 1030. This is the second time I've used it, the first being another plow day a few weeks ago. I replaced the clutch two weeks ago.

Warmed up the engine after arriving this morning (35 degrees and windy) and headed out to plow. About half way down the field, the engine started laboring hard, pulled down, and quit. Took it out of gear, pushed in the clutch, and tried to restart. Engine would not turn over, as in locked up. Figured I had a real problem, but after letting it sit for about 3 minutes, it fired right up, and I plowed with it till 5pm. Temp gauge was at about 185, with 40 psi oil pressure. Before this happened, the PTO would always run. After, the PTO is stopped, and I can't turn it by hand. I have never moved the PTO lever. Is there anything PTO related that would cause this? Any other ideas?

The 1030 seems to have more pto issues than the 930 and 830s we have had. The pto can unscrew itself. I suppose something could have been in a bind and caused the motor to power down. By trying the starter you may have jiggled it enough to let it spin free again. If the brake is working you can not turn it by hand, you need to pull up a little to release the brake. You can remove the round cover on the right side of the rear housing and see if you have loose clutch plates hanging around.

Thanks for the reply, Jerry. Since I have no need for the PTO, I hope that's the problem, rather than something else. I'll pull that cover and take a look.

Thanks, James. I have spent a lot of time with it. It is about due for a new set of shares- it's taking more effort to make it plow deep. Those #16 IH plows were built like tanks, but the clearance wasn't the best. Still like it better than the later ones.
