Since Tom posted pictures of his baler, I have been thinking I would like to have a Case baler to go behind my 830. Right now I am using a New Holland 271. I sure don't want to go down in capacity, so what numbers should I be looking for? I bale about 5000 bales a year, and sorta want to stay with twine.

Think of your New Holland as a current Case cousin and stay where you are at. Case made OK balers for the small farmer or rancher, but I may get blasted for this... not an operation that bales 5000 bales a year. I like Case stuff, but my other color balers will bale 8 to 10 ton an hour each. Can any ones Case come close?

I think a Case baler would be wore out.
My dad worked for a Case dealer for a about eight months in the 60's. He didn't like it but the owner appointed dad as "baler man" he got to set up the balers and go out to the farms and adjust the knotters. Dad said on a good day the Case balers would only miss about every third bale. Some of the customers would get quit mad when there new balers wouldn't work.
The owner of the dealership said he didn't make money on warranty work. Would make dad clock out and drive his own car ( a willy's jeep) to the customers house to adjust or repair the baler.
The dealer must have sold a bunch of balers. Still see them at consignment auctions and junk piles.

Have to agree on the 200/300 series, the 130/133 are "family" balers as well, I am wondering how this 140W I just got will be, it has the bigger chamber, and is heavy built to say the least, mEl said 100lb is not out of the norm, they also made the "NAP 3" and I would bet it would shuck out the bales, but I agree the 271 is a great baler stay where you are would be my vote unless you can get a nice 140/160 I would say you will be stepping back for sure in tons per hour, as for CASE balers missing every third bale I can say all the CASE balers I have been around if set correctly would maybe miss one in a couple thousand unless you have a twine issue, when set correctly they are just as good as any NH I have owned/ran too

Tom, I grew up with a NT Baler/twine and Wisconsin V4 engine. That baler would spit out 100lb bales, and never miss a beat. Maybe miss 5 bales a season, baling 3000 square bales a year. Great machine.

I have to agree, I have a 230 and it feeds too slow if you are trying to make 5000 bales a year. It is good for 1000 to maybe 2000. But Tractorguy's dad may just not have known how to adjust balers. My baler will miss a not here or there, but for the most part will pack a nice bale and reliably tie knots, now that it is correctly adjusted. It is a nice little baler for what it is designed for. I can not knock New Holland balers though.

All I mcan say mis the dealer and your dad wer baler men. There wasn't a better knotter made than the CASE Knotter. At 14 yrs old I was driving a Case LA on the front of a 140T baler. It never missed a knot unless we made a bad splice between balls of twine. My dad, a Case dealer earned the title of "The Baler Man" and he taught me well in the later years. I have never found a Case baler that couldn't be fixed in any condition. Changes would vary from simple twine tension adjustment to adding bale chamber wedges, to agjusting the feeding system/ sweep arm adjustment in later models.

I'm with Loren. Our dealer, LaPean Imp. Had the same dealer sales plaques. In dairy country premium hay takes priority over your wedding or the birth of your first born. Good hay = more milk= more money. Guys would not have put up with garbage. The baler was King then. It took someone that understood how a baler worked. I've tried but just cannot grasps the concept of how the knotter works.

Dad went from a 45T IHC to a brand new 133 Case baler. Us kids hated the Case baler as it never missed a bale and never broke down. Dealer talked him into a new 220 Case. Didn't have the capacity of the 133 and was not trouble free like the 133. Only stayed a couple years and got traded for a new New Holland. He put up a lot of square bales for 70 milk cows and young cattle.

Best tractor for baling was Dads DC. She had a sweet spot as far as speed and RPM, which He thought was critical. He taught me to look for the heavy spots in the windrows and adjust my speed .Sometimes you would have to sneak up on heavy spots which would shear a flywheel on the baler. Dad had the knack for setting the knotter timing. my 2 sense!
