Help - Case SC leaking oil

I have a 1950 Case SC tricycle that has always had an oil leak at back of engine where it mounts to tractor. But it has gotten much worse. Appears to be some sort of gasket that is deteriorating. Any suggestions - preferably short of splitting the tractor?

Yes, there is a gasket in there. I don't know how to stop the leak without replacing the gasket. Splitting the tractor is not too bad if you use splitting pins. As you may already know, oil circulates into the clutch housing from the engine. There is an oil drain plug on both the engine and bell housing. You should drain both compartments when you change the oil.

If you do a search on this forum for splitting pins, you will see some information including drawings posted. I found this: "Make yourself two 3/4" cold-rolled pins 15 1/2" long and install them on each side of the engine where the large diameter bolts were. These should have 3/16" holes on each end so you can place spring clips in them. They keep everything aligned when pulling apart and in reinstalling. Just keep the parting distance even top and bottom and nothing will be bent or broken."

Make sure its not leaking around the starter hole. There is a cork gasket between the starter and housing to seal it.

I may not have a choice - oil appears to be coming from bottom "quadrant" between front of transmission and engine about where oil pan ends. Only gasket I see in parts book goes all the way around this interface at front of transmission in one piece.

To make a suggestion, I need to know the point where the leak is coming from. Is it coming from a point at the joint or is it coming from a bolt head or nut? Clean the area and look for the ozz.

I assume you have checked to see if the bolts are tight. The std torque on a 1/2 bolt is 75 lb ft. If the bolts are grade 5, (three slots on the head) I would go to 85 lb ft and see if that stops the leak.
