So I just bought an old case 1740 and this is the first piece I have owned for myself........ I have ran excavators loaders and skid steers for about 10 yrs now and have gotten pretty familiar with most of the systems........except I have never ran a machine with this clutch setup......im learning (have had it for approx. 2 weeks) but I am a little concerned that it does not have a break...you have to engage the reverse clutches to stop and there is no parking break..........any thoughts on at least a parking break but possibly a working foot break? I have looked over the schematics and it looks like I don't have the correct axles nor the master cylinder or any of the brake system parts for that matter.......a little research shows that brakes were an "option" I guess original owner felt they were a tad better operator than me........
any help would be greatly appreciated I know my way around a shop and have almost every tool thanks..........

we sold dozens of 1740's Great machines,, as you found out they have clutch wheel engagement not hydro. these will last a long time IF you do not slip them, use the variable speed lever to keep the speed you want with full clutch engagement, Grease the variable unit and always return the variable to slow when parking, as for brakes the correct way to stop them is to reverse smoothly, the brake system they had was only for parking

ok thanks for the reply......I am a little confused as to how the variable speed lever works........im thinking it puts more pressure on the drive belt by closing the gap on the two sheaves? if so I think mine isn't working.....ill take a look tomorrow......but when I use the lever it sounds like its under a nasty load (that terrible sound when you try to curl the bucket too far) maybe ill try to grease it....how complicated is it to tear apart and check out?

Moving the lever forward should speed up the
forward motion. Pulling back on the lever slows the
machine down. I have a 1530 with a bigger than
factory engine and my Dad had a 1740 diesel. Same
engine as a 630 Case.
