Case LA clutch stuck

We have 3 donated antique tractors in our Antique Tractor Association. We restore and auction these tractors to fund our scholarship fund. One recent donated tractor is a 1948 gas Case LA. It fired right up but the clutch appears to be stuck as you have to kill the engine to shift gears and the brakes are weak, otherwise it appears to be a good tractor. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get the clutch faces to separate without splitting the tractor. We are trying to decide on whether to sell the tractor as is or put some volunteer time and parts into fixing the problem. Thanks

Put the tractor in 4th gear and push start. Head
for a hill but leave the clutch lever in the
disengaged position. They usually break loose when
the engine has to pull going up the hill. Course if
the clutch disc has come loose and doubled up. all
bets are off.

Thanks for the tip. Sounds like a great idea. We'll give it a shot.

Before you break something, or someone gets hurt, you can remove the clutch covers & start spraying the clutch assembly with a rust penetrant. Observe the throwout mechanism & be sure something isn't broken.

My dc does that every time. I just put it in gear
with the clutch released and hit the starter and it
lets loose. Of course that is after only sitting for
a few weeks, could eadily be stuck harder after a
long time sitting.

Jon!! Jon!! Jon!! I'm surprised at you!! Nose cones for those starters are hard to come by, which is what you might be needing someday. Sounds like yours is a foot clutch, try holding the pedal down w/ a block of wood when not in use.

I recently bought my dad's Oliver 1650, and after
sitting over 10 years, its clutch was stuck. I
just chained it to the tow hook on one of my large
trucks, and started it in gear with my foot on the
clutch. It broke free right away.

Take off the retangular hand-hole cover and see what things look like. It could be just a stuck plate, but you might have something stuck/broken. or the fibre has come off the disk and piled up. You can have someone move the lever and make sure all the fingers release ( they should move to the touch with the clutch disengaged if the plate is stuck.) Check if you can see the pressure plate move when the clutch is disengaged. BTW guys, La's are hand clutch. Someone may have thought it was a john Deere and left it sit with the clutch engaged.
