HYDRAULIC OIL OR ENGINE OIL

I purchased an old Case 311b tractor with a hydraulic loader. The seller mentioned to use straight 30 weight oil in the hydraulics, but I never asked if it was 30 weight hydraulic oil (ISO 100) or 30 weight engine oil. It seems logical to use hydraulic oil in hydraulics, but I have read that most people use SAE 30 engine oil. Q1: What is the difference between 30 weight hydraulic and 30 weight non engine oil and Q2: Which one should I use in my hydraulics? Thanks in advance.

My recommendation is to use Transmission-Hydraulic Fluid, such as "Hy Tran". Transmission fluid for the lubrication of the range gears, & Hydraulic fluid for it's anti-foaming qualities. Engine oil has neither of these qualities. In warmer climates, or tractors that don't see use in the Winter, I add 85W140 to the Hytran. 25% is what I add.

John, I am more confused now. The manual says to use 10W engine oil or Transmission A oil, the previous owner says 30W oil (not sure if it is engine or hydraulic), and you are saying use hytran of some weight.

I have to add some oil to my hydraulic bucket on my 1959 Case 311b tractor. Please help

The previous owner more than likely used 30w non-detergent motor oil because it was the cheapest he could find. if you're just 'topping it off' any general purpose hydraulic fluid should work

When the tractor was built, a universal Trans.-Hyd. fluid was unheard of. For reasons I spelled out earlier, "Hy-tran", or similar Tran's-Hyd fluid is far superior to any of the other oils you mention. My recommendation is to drain the SAE 30 currently in there, & re-fill w/ "Hy-Tran" or a similar Trans-Hyd Fluid & add 25% 85W140 to it.
