VAC hydraulics

Just finished rebuilding hydraulic pump on my 1950 VAC and am thinking about adding a hydraulic oil filter in the suction line but I need to know the gpm output of the pump. Can anyone help?
Thanks in advance.

The low pressure hydraulic pump delivers 7 gpm at 1425 engine rpm.

You do not want a filter in the suction line of that pump. If the filter becomes restricted or clogged the pump will wipe out and you won't be able to repair it.

Hydraulic systems usually have a filter in the return line to the sump.

Your VAC will have a return filter if it is not between serial nr 5370499 and 5458564 (torque tube casting nr VT596) with the original factory torque tube.

Yup, the filter is in the torque tube. An edge wound paper job. But, FWIW, I've never seen one that was actually all there. All mine were in pieces. I'm not sure you can still get the filter either, but then I've never looked for one.

The filter is that special style element that CASE uses on all the earlier hyd.'s such as the SC & DC. Special size peculiar to the VA series. We stock them here.

Thank you for that information! My VAC is a s/n 5456226 model and so it appears not to have a filter. I noticed a slight damage to the gears in the pump. Maybe some metal flecks or something. Do you think I should drain the torque tube remove the return line and pulley housing and flush it with kerosene and re-fill it? Or just leave it alone? I've been using trans-hydraulic oil in it.

For your tractor serial nr, the factory torque tube casting nr VT596 was not cast to provide a filter area. If the torque tube was changed it will have a filter the same or similar to the pic.

I don't know anywhere in the system you could get metal aside from the pump. If your have a belt pulley, the gears are the primary suspect. The drive shaft support bearing right aft of the gear is a taper roller bearing not likely.

Any quality low viscosity hydraulic oil is suitable for this system.

I would clean the sump, certainly wouldn't hurt. Any quality low viscosity hydraulic oil is suitable for this system.
