Well, the 440 has been locking into reverse more frequently. Real pain in the butt to work the shift cover off when the rail is in the tranny web. I took the cover off this morning to check things out. Low and behold someone has had it apart before (wink) The cover had been replaced and apparently came off a tractor with shuttle trany, as the R was ground off the top of the cover. Anyway, I looked it over, and whomever reassembled the shifting forks had put the stop bushing on the wrong side of the reverse fork. I removed the setscrew on the fork and pushed the rail forward enough to remove fork and reinstall the bushing on the front side of the fork to keep it from over shifting and letting the lever slip past. 5 min fix, to cure the problem. No more cussing at it in the woods when I forgot to be careful shifting.

Hey Bro,
I haven't had experience with shuttle shifts in these tractors, and this one doesn't have one. It was a bareback highway mower tractor with a hydraulic driven belly mower. Mower was gone when I got the tractor, but the tranny shift cover was odviously been changed out for some reason. I was under the impression than when a shuttle was in front of the 4 spd that the bushings on the reverse rail prevented an operator from selecting revers in the 4spd. Reverse was there, just locked out with the bushings.

Pull your shifting cover and chect to see if the reverse fork is bushed properly to prevent it from moving past the detent. It should drop into the detent and the bushing on the rail should be tight against the boss of the cover.
Your ball on the end of your shift lever could also be warn, allowing it to slip between the gates on the forks. You can weld up the ball tip to prevent that.

According to the seller my 310 spent the 20 years he had as a light loader tractor, cleaning barns, etc.

Right away it started sticking in reverse or stuck in two gears. I pulled the shifter cover and found the interlock plug between the reverse rail and 1 & 2 rail worn as in the pic.

I was clearing my home site and needed the tractor so I put the worn plug between 1 & 2 and 3 & 4 rails with the worn end on the 3 & 4 rail side.

That was 13 years ago, haven't had one problem shifting any gear since. One of these days I am going fix that plug (maybe).

In most regards the early 530 & 310 shifter covers are the same, balls and plugs are the same p/n. Looking at the parts site there are some differences like the 530 reverse rail spacer that Loren is talking about appears to be on the opposite side of the 310 reverse lever. Check it out, I am just going by the parts view on the 530.

I lost reverse and pulled the cover. discovered that revers was only meshing by about 15% of the gear and of course that leading edge of the gear was all rounded off from people mashing it in. maybe the reverse fork was bent but I sure couldn't bend it back or at all for that matter. so I cut the fork part off and welded it back on like 3/8" farther back. that solved the gear not going far enough back and got the gears meshing 100% across each other. that's when it started getting stuck into reverse. I built the ball up several times I guess maybe I didn't make it long enough. I don't think mine has a spacer. I will pull it apart and check now that you put that great pic up. here is mine before I welded it.
